I heard that Mac warranties it's tool boxes for lifetime, and that includes drawer slides. Does anyone know how to go about getting then to honor that warranty? Do I go through the truck, or the company? What do I say? Do I have to prove that I'm the original purchaser of the box? The box is an MB 1700.

You have to be the original owner; but they are not strict on this... just say that you are; they don't require proof.

I ran into this for my brother, about 2 months ago. Gave them (email) the model number and told them that there were three slides that needed warranty replacement. They asked for a picture of the box, which I sent. The reply was that I correct on the model box and that the slides were # this for right and #this for left. At which they said that they were $8 and some change not including shipping. I asked about the warranty and the reply was to copy and send them proof of purchase. I asked my brother if he had that. Nope, no warranty! A truck might favor you more. Good luck!

The thing is, guys like mechanicnamedjohn have obviously developed a good report with their Mac dealer. Myself, I own only about twenty Mac tools and I don't like their current offerings enough to want to buy more new tools from them. Snap On on the other hand, I have a lot of. I do like this box. It's very broken in, though, and I would like to replace the eight or so slides that are failing. Only one set of slides on the whole box has good detents.

They were $8? Were they ball bearing? When I talked to them the lady said $18 a piece.

Going to talk to the Mac dealer today. My buddy who has been been a faithful supporter of his business is going to try to call in a favor. I took several pictures of the poorly performing slides as well as video showing how worn they are. Any advice is welcomed.

I had a mb1700 or 1800...can't remember but I had all the slides done at one time. I had to get approval from a area manager though.

It was easy really but took a few calls over a few days. They shipped the slides to me and I swapped them all at one time.

Saw the Mac rep yesterday, and not too surprisingly he was reticent to handle the claim himself. However, he put me on phone with Mac after explaining what is going on with my box. The guy on the phone said that warranty will call me back to process the request. When I mused, "I hope this works out..." he assured me that they will take care of me. They told my rep that as well, so now I have his word. That, and ten bucks will buy me lunch a Taco Bell. Nevertheless, they have been really cool about it so far. I think having my rep call gives me a lot more credibility in their eyes since the guy I talked to was a lot more easy going about it. I'll keep you guys posted.

I haven't received a call yet, and their business hours are almost over. Think I should call them? I'm beginning to wonder if they shined me on.

So, I did call last night because I was getting a little antsy and I was hoping I could find out when they were going to call and tell me if the warranty was approved. Well, it turns out that the slides were already shipped on the 21st! They just approved it and didn't call. Even more, they don't need the old slides back. I will definitely be using my old slides for my upcoming workbench project. They aren't in great shape, but they will work for the moving shelves on my workbench which won't get the heavy use that the toolbox drawers get. Thankfully, Snap On sells replacement detents for these slides, so I will be able to fix them up a little bit.

PLOT TWIST:

I received my slides from Mac, and I don't mean to look a gift horse in the mouth, but I'm pretty disappointed with the replacements. The original slides were all Accuride and of excellent quality. The slides they sent me are bottom of the barrel Taiwan stuff. I don't think these things could have been made any cheaper. The slides have less than half as many ball bearings as the originals and aren't nearly as smooth or strong. The large track on the original slides have 36 balls per groove. The new ones have just 6! That's not a typo. The total ball count (per slide) of the originals comes out to 126. The new ones: 54.

Rolled/stamped steel construction, felt bumpers instead of rubber, flimsy, flimsy, flimsy. My last set of slides lasted 30 years. How long are these going to last?

They threw them in light duty cardboard boxes with little to no packing material.

Side by side. It's kind of hard to see the bearings in the newer slides, but the duller looking ones on the top are Accurides. The shiny ones are Taiwan.

Exciting update! So, I called Mac again about the inferior slides they sent and I told them that those slides weren't going to work for me. After getting the run around for a bit, I was able to talk with a manager. By this time, I was pretty annoyed. He said they couldn't offer anything better. Those were the only slides available for my box. He was really apologetic and he acknowledged that the available slides are inferior. I told that this basically makes my box worthless. That's when he made an offer I couldn't refuse. He said that they would give a NOS 2011 Macsimizer for trade on my old box! So, yesterday, a regional rep picked up my MB1700 and dropped of this beauty. I'm over the moon! What a great company!

That's a hell of a way to have new drawer slides delivered. I assume you verified they weren't the new Taiwan chit before you accepted delivery? I prolly would have said to hell with it. I'll take new box and crappy slides!
