Mac extra long DOE wrenches

These came from my dad. He said they were tucked in a lot of mostly scrap he had bought years ago at an industrial auction. He was a mechanic and said he didn't use them much, but sometimes were the only answer to a particular problem.

He gave them to me after I showed him my work in progress Mac BXL long double box wrench collection.

Googling didn't turn up much, although there is a lone D11L on eBay currently. Edit: I don't think these are tappet wrenches. They are full sized, extra long DOE's. Maybe a custom application.

The largest wrench, D12L, comes in at exactly 22" long. Definitely well used, but interesting wrenches nonetheless...i just hope I don't have to collect the first 8 or so sizes now...sigh...

D12L...1-1/4" & 1-1/8"
D11L...1-1/16" & 15/16"
D10L...1" & 13/16"
D9L...7/8" & 3/4"

The same wrench just a different part number. I would say yours are just older than the ones in the catalog. The newer part number just indicates the size of the open ends. 2428 would be 3/4" and 7/8"

Dave,

The 1951 catalog only shows five (5) wrenches. The only one you are missing is D8L (11/16 x 3/4).

I wish I could help you, but I only have two of the wrenches you already have.

Lugz, thanks. Kinda weird that 3/4 is the only size doubled. At least I only have to look for 1 now, lol

But only because the wrenches in the extra long DOE series are so high up the range. In the regular length DOE series, which goes from 1/4 x 5/16 to 1-1/8 x 1-1/4 (in 13 wrenches), the 5/16, 3/8, 1/2, 9/16, 5/8, and the 3/4 openings are all doubled. Only the 7/8 and up to 1-1/4 openings have an exclusive end.

Never knew they made ones like that, but then I never had any MAC or Snap On catalogs around to check. All the ones I have found were home made...cut a regular DOE in half, insert both ends into a suitable size steel pipe, smash the pipe flat and weld around the wrench ends

Definitely going to start searching..

Nice set Dave. I long those extra long wrenches. Have that similar Cornwell 1-1/16 x 15/16 found a little while back that’s between 20 to 20-1/2”.

I've never seen anything like this before, either...usually DOE wrenches aren't my cup of tea. I'm sure finding the smallest size will be a challenge...

In the 1946 Cornwell catalog, 3bay's 15/16" x 1-1/16" extra long (21") wrench was called a Bendix Brake Anchor Wrench. A few others down the range in sizes had the same application. A couple even longer ones with bigger openings were called "U" Bolt Wrenches. And the biggest was for Cletracs (Cleveland Tractor Co. tractors).

Given the obvious and well-known long-discussed resemblance of many early MAC and Cornwell wrenches, right down to the unique hex shape of the throat and the phonetic model numbering approach, I think it's reasonable for us to use that to assume the MAC wrenches had similar if not identical purposes, regardless of the specific nature of the yet as unresolved relationship (i.e., whether they were covert partners, subcontractors, or just had a close informal collaborative association between the design principals at each plant, etc)
