Was heading to a job today and drove by a scrap yard. Seen a few tool boxes sitting by the giant claw machine playing around in one of the piles. Joked about stopping after the job was done and ended up actually stopping.

Worker said he'd sell the box for $700 because the guy that dropped it off said that's what the company paid for it. Ended up agreeing to $150 because it had some damage, primarily from the fact it was thrown in a truck with a bunch of other metal. The other boxes were smashed in from being on the bottom of the pile except a craftsman bottom box with only one dent that's easy to fix.

So the fun part is it had some corporate stuff on it(location, dept, section, and of course the corporate logo) and it would've probably been fairly good condition if it hadn't been through the scrap bin.

Got it back to the shop and fixed what I could and removed all the stickers and paperwork. The top hatch was 3/8 forward so dents had to be worked out and hinge reset. Other than that it was primarily average dents, noticable dent on bottom box drawer. Couldn't do it perfectly but the box doesn't have any issues now and is in my office with my other two boxes. End of the day now I have enough room to keep getting more stuff for my collections.

Don't know how old it is (assuming probably late 80s-90s) or what it's actually worth as is. Also it is missing the piece of metal to pull it, both sides but probably came with just one, and I'm assuming it was just bent 1/8 plated steel. Also missing the hatch stops, the two pieces of metal that keep the hatch from opening too far.

Looking to figure out keys for it now, pretty simple lock(plates on both sides of cylinder, keyway is open) but I haven't cut anything too complex before. Can't figure out the situation for getting a set cut at a key machine with it being an older lock and I can't find any info linking Mac box locks to Detex or any other brand. Codes are 8066 and 8049, no branding.

Also the hatch interior lock switch is interesting, little stiff but it works. Trying to figure out how to lubricate it eventually too, right now it works but it's a little painful to use without a rag.

That is the same as my very first tool box that I bought new 30 years ago. It was considerably more than 150 dollars though. 🙃
Was it closer to $700? Can't find any info but the corporate guy(assuming the scrap guy wasn't just adding to the story) said they paid $700 but they also probably ordered a hundred boxes at once so I'd assume a discount was in order.

This one was box 2, station 18/20, specified lab, specified location so that's at least 20 boxes just for one division of the building it was in and for a department that you wouldn't even expect any tools beyond what you could fit in an electricians bag.

Not giving too much info on the corporation but this box was in the child R&D lab. So either they were putting toys together and seeing what the kids actually liked or they were making cybernetically modified toddler terminators.

Given the variation in the labeled drawers I'm leaning more towards the toddler terminators... you'd never need so many different tools just to put a playhouse together.

Mac will sell keys to you fairly cheap. You have to fill out a legal paper stating that you are the legal owner of the box.
I went through the process but when it came to paying for them they would not let me use a prepaid Visa card so I gave up. I didn't know I could register the card. The total was $10 including the shipping.

I was looking at this if I can't get the keys local.

$20 effectively for both keys and it looks to be the right key.

I wish, it was somewhere around $4000.Folks need to price good tools that will stand up to all day, every day use. Hard use. Tool boxes from Mac, Snap-On, or Matco are hugely expensive. Thank God I am in the last 15 years of my career, I hope I don't have to buy another ****** tool box. None of them, no matter the name on it, is worth the fifteen to twenty thousand dollar price tag

Got mats in it now along with some odds and ends, pretty much going for a personal box without the doubles where my other boxes are up to 6 of some stuff. Also finally have room for the Craftsman socket trays, only had room for standard before so the spare metric stuff was in a Kennedy carry box in old socket rail tins. Also sockets in wrong area on the trays are sizes that aren't on them.

Got keys from a locksmith but turns out the locks are keyed left handed. Same code, same design, same mfg, but the ones for craftsman and most of the other brands are right handed while Mac is special with it's left handed keyway.

So in the end I got 4 keys without locks and 2 locks without keys now. Going to see about a Mac dealer at some point, probably easier than doing it online and they used to stop at two places by my shop so it shouldn't be too hard to track one down.

Ended up messaging Mac support and they said the keys are discontinued and new locks are the only option. The keys are still available on easykeys but full lock and keys are 18.99 (through Mac) versus 17.74 for the keys (through easykeys) so there's not much difference in price really.

Seems like new locks would be the better option, no wear plus matching keys instead of two different locks. Only thing now is I've never replaced a bottom box lock so I'm not sure how difficult it is and I thought someone on a different thread mentioned they got a lock but it didn't fit so I need to look around for more info on that.

Seems like it wouldn't be too difficult to put a new lock in. Also seen cam locks fairly cheap compared to Macs price, not sure how to go about ordering matched keyed ones but wouldn't mind doing my other box too and have all 4 (8 if I do one of the shop boxes with no keys too) locks keyed the same though so I'm looking around and might make a post asking about preferred brands on 3rd party locks.

I Google searched Mac 5200 tool box and this thread came up. I see it's old, but I'll give it a shot. I just bought this same combo at auction. Nearly perfect shape but dirty. It's a 50th Anniversary model. I gave $325 for it, and I'm happy with it. I've got it all apart and cleaning it up now. Did Mac put out a middle box for this? Usually a 2 or 3 drawer box that went between the top and bottom box. I'd like to find one of those and a side box.
