Do more research, I mean check more brands to see if you can find any other brands offering you a discount.

****HINT, there ARE more brands, I am just trying to convince you to look for them.

I think Snapon offers more then 20% off but MAC is in fact 50% off. Matco also offers a nice discount. Register yourself online, don't worry about doing it through school.

If you want a set, Mac seems to be the only one that has fairly well rounded ones. I would build my own set piece by piece with tools from all three. They all have certain tools that are great and tools that are not so great. Everybody has their own opinion and your're about to get a bunch of em.

Like diesel said, you can find more discounts if ya look.

Snap on is 50%. I just hit the limit on my student discount with them :( pay snap on off and start work on the matco tools. I may have to look into other brands too.

If you cant get Snap On for the discount they offer with their Student Excellence Program (40-50% me thinks) then get into a program (or school) that does let you.

OK, OK went a little off the handle there. I just think you are being played by your school with only the 20% off Snap On.

Mac is fine. As is Matco. Getting a nice discount like that makes buying nice tools the first time around a little easier to swallow. I think Snap On is the best of the big three and I am not the only one who thinks this. I personally would go with Matco before Mac though.

Seriously though all of them will enable a mechanic to do good work. It is the chucklehead behind the tool who makes the work good. Just start out with the basics and go from there. Mac and Matco and Snap On have everything you will need. It can pay to mix and match between the companies though because even though Snap On makes the best of something does not necissarily mean you should pay 3-4 times what you could get it for from Mac for a fully functional tool with the same warranty.

The only thing I've found useful from Mac is their "Edge" sockets, I have 1 set and it works great on semi rounded off bolts. They are made overseas though and are a little weak. Other than that, everything else I'm unimpressed with or it's made by someone else.

Get the Snap On. If not Snap On go with SK. Do not buy MAC. Buy Gear Wrench before buying MAC.

You're just starting out, buy used off CL or ebay or elsewhere. Lots and lots of complete sets out there at a greater discount than 50%. Do your research, not just your local CL to get pricing and go from there. Instant gratification, sometimes lasts a long, long time.

Matco's student discount averages at 52%. Every month they run a special on items that's even a bigger discount.

During christmas time, I noticed quite a few items at nearly 80% off. Even though many items were rebranded and marked up (like lisle or otc) the discount reduced them below online retailer prices, let alone brick and mortar retail prices. A lot of loose single items and specailized items, not so much in the faster moving basic sets and hardline stuff.
