Hey everybody :)

MAC has a pretty unique lineup of sockets under the name "Precision Torque". They feature a non-slip design inside that look very similar to the WrightGRIP wrench & Snap-on Flank Drive+.

The set that I have is a 3/8" Metric Deepwell chrome set, and it comes with an aluminum socket rail. The pegs spin 360 degrees, so you can easily line everything up neatly in your box.

What they are claiming with these, are that they can easily remove damaged fasteners.....up to 85% rounded off. In the video I crank a bolt down with a 3/8" M18 FUEL, then round the corners off with pliers....and you can see for yourself what happens!

watched the video, and those sockets look pretty sweet. I may have to ask my MAC guy about them come friday

Would you ever review a tool that doesnt live up to the hype or doesnt work as advertised? Sorta like the Irwin "Knipex knockoffs"?

Thanks!

And if I review a tool it is because I dont think it is a gimmicky piece of junk. Not all tools are "pro quality", but that doesnt make them useless....many DIYers, and those without unlimited tool budgets hopefully appreciate when I take the time to review homeowner grade tools also.

As far tool bashing, I dont do it. If I hate a tool, I keep it between me & the tool, and choose NOT to make videos complaining about them. The only reason I made the Knipex vs Irwin video was to prove that they were NOT "the same thing" like people for some reason were saying in the comments. The Knipex pliers are far superior....but then again they do cost a lot more. For the pro, it should be a no brainer. For the DIYer, it most likely would not matter as much.

Wow. I need to stop watching your videos because I end up emptying my wallet every time.

Lol...thanks! :)

I've been trying to find these sockets for sale and I can't find them at all. No Mac dealer around me. I want to jump on the precision torque band wagon and get rid of the snap on chrome sockets.

Before I watch the video, I am just wondering real quick. Lets say we have a nice chrome bolt (Ferrari for instance) its a 17mm. Will these marr, dent, damage, scuff the bolt? If so how badly?

Dammit all. Wish I hadn't clicked play. I truly have all the sockets a man should be legally allowed to own, but there may be room for one more set.

Sweet sockets! And i'm definitely a fan of your videos.

Well thanks!

Here this set is on MAC's site --- http://www.mactools.com/en-us/Sockets/Sockets/SXDM146BRPT/14-PC-3-8-Drive-Metric-Deep-Socket-Set-

Haha nice :) I like the Duratek lineup a lot. I believethe COO on these are Taiwan.

Oh I am sure it would....anything with teeth (even Flank Drive+ wrenches will mar fasteners). No one tool is the best for every job.

Orileys has a homeowner grade similar to these.

We dont have Oreilly's around here, so I couldnt say one way or another.

Dammit all. Wish I hadn't clicked play. I truly have all the sockets a man should be legally allowed to own, but there may be room for one more set.

Hahaha :) That is pretty funny.

They're a flank drive socket. I wouldn't use them on a lambo:lol_hitti

Mac definitely has the largest selection of these, an Asian company came up with these and random sets are available on ebay. The company is called Xi-on from my research which isn't like professional or anything they are the ones that came up with these and probably are making them for Mac.

I DO have a couple sets of the Mac ones, they come on a nice rail and they are very very good sockets, and that is coming from a snap on fan. I have the chrome shallow metric 1/4 drive and 3/8 drive. I was waiting for more sets to go on promo but of course my Mac driver just walked in one day, handed me am air tool I had out for service and said he was done lol. So again no more Mac. It worries me about that cause the premium price of them and then having to do mail order warranty.

Great video as always!!! I would have liked to see a close up shot of the socket teeth after you removed the bolt from the socket though.

The precision sockets seem to be an updated version of the older MAC Edge series. On s side note, the boxed end on MAC Edge ratcheting wrenches have the same modified six point design with teeth.

No reason that Mac's site should be any different than Snap On's or Matco's!

Well, I find that Snap On's site, before they 'improved' it about a year ago, was MUCH easier to use.

I have some GM Performance, Duralast, and HF sockets that are all similar to that design. Not saying they're as good, just saying that design can be bought for less than the tool truck.

The HF sockets came with the 64pc set. The ratchets were ****** but every single socket is 6 point, and you get 3/8 shallow metric and SAE (deep in SAE), 1/4 shallow metric and SAE, and 1/2 shallow SAE for 30 bucks.. I use the snot out of them and have only broken one in a cheater-pipe-related incident. Broke the ratchet at the same time and HF warrantied them both, no questions asked.

I think the OP should have done the test a few times, comparing the MAC sockets to it's competitors. That would have been interesting, but great video nonetheless.

:+1:

Me too, gonna have to get a part time job on the weekend to pay for the new toys

Haha :)

They're Taiwan, but all the MAC sockets having a part number ending with R will be U.S. made.

Yep, these are Tiawan. I wasnt aware about the "R" classification....thanks!

Nice! Yeah, I want to get some of the 1/4" versions too.

Looks like I'm gonna have to find another Mac tool truck, I see someone on here brought the shallow set last year on the new tool arrivals thread, but they didn't give us any feedback on them, now I've seen your video review, I'll be extracting some of my cash on them.

Glad I could help!

Thanks! And I just went and took some pictures of the 19mm internals for you.....absolutely ZERO damage to the teeth (all 3 sections.....see pics below).

Thank you! MAC's site is, um, what are the words I'm looking for - F**KING AWFUL.

No problem!

Nice and informative video as usual Great job thanks for helping me spend my $

Well thank you!

I wasnt aware that anyone else had designs like this to be honest. I highly doubt they are "the same" though.....maybe similar, but just like the WrightGRIP or Flank Drive+ wrenches, specific designs are patented & even though these do work as advertised....I cannot say if the store brand ones would work or not.

Also, I considered comparing different sockets VS rounded off bolts....but, as I am sure you can understand...there would be no way for me to get identical tests (like I can with new bolts in the wrench videos). By cranking down on it with the M18 FUEL & then rounding the corners off with pliers, I could not duplicate it accurately & people would just complain.

I bought a set of those in metric from a pawn shop and they are nice and sturdy but I didn't like how they marred bolts at times.

I would like to get some of this socket type. These would NOT be my primary sockets. It looks like these sockets are made in Taiwan. I heard that O'Reilly has a similar socket set so I went by the store.

They have sockets with the same teeth in the sides of a 6 point socket. They are only standard depth, not deep. They are made in Taiwan and it says Alltrade on the package so I am sure that is the maker/importer. The set costs about $15.

These would only be used on frozen fasteners. Of course if the fastener is frozen it becomes really important how the socket fits the fastener.

What are peoples experience with the Taiwan made Alltrade sockets. Is it worth the extra $200 to get the Mac version?

These are nice feeling/looking sockets. In my experience, all of the special grips on sockets and wrenches are no match when it comes to rust, which is usually when you come across rounded heads.
