Hi, I have two older mac ratchets with the screws going down, I was wondering if there is a upgrade kit like I am going to buy for my matco 60 tooth to upgrade to 88? Thanks. They are both 3/8 drive.

I don't think Mac has any upgrades for there older ratchets or make them finer tooth. Mac is a little far behind for high count tooth ratchets. I think all there fine tooth’s are roto-head ratchets. I know the 1/2” pear head ratchet is 56 tooth counts. If you want a finer tooth Mac ratchet you will have to buy a new one.

What model number is the ratchet? If the tool number is MR5 I am not aware of any upgrade gear set. I had an older 1/2 drive MAC ratchet tool #VR11 and a MAC ratchet tool number MR5. Both had screws that were in the face of the ratchet. The screws in both my VR11 and my MR5 stripped at different times while replaceing the gear kit and the MAC tool dealer replaced with the new style ratchet with the screws in the back of the ratchet head. I still have a 1/2 drive MAC ratchet,(the same as VR11 with a plastic handle), with the screws in the face of the ratchet and I have not had any problems with it as of yet. I also have a MAC MR5 in a 1/4 inch drive metric tool kit that has the older style screw in the face ratchet that has never given me any problems either.

The only thing you can do is to shorten the tension spring to get a finer tooth feel.
