I picked up a MAC TOOLS 3/8 ratchet XPR8 with a brass head on it. Can't seem to find another one like it doing a google search.... Is this a rare item, or an oddball thing? Comfort grip, not old, ratchets very nicely, maybe a fine tooth.

Did you actually take a magnet to it to confirm you're not just seeing the copper layer applied during chroming?

XPR were basically MACs version of Proto Big Dawg. I think they were around 50 tooth which was pretty high for the times.

MAC make gold plated "collectors" ratchets from time to time. Might be that rather than brass?

Ampro and others make a brass-like alloy for non-sparking ratchets and other tools to be used in environments where sparks = death, however, this alloy is also non-magnetic so I doubt that's why it looks that.

I have a NOS Proto index head ratchet. Not quite the same thing, but close. It has some type of coating on the drive square. Like anodizing, or paint.

Could it be a titanium coating like on drill bits? The benefit on bits would seem equally advantageous on a ratchet stud. :dunno:

Strange. Maybe the previous owner didn't want to engrave it and thought of a different way to differentiate his ratchet from his co-workers and while he had it apart, painted it?

I have a brass breaker bar, but the entire thing is brass. In the no-spark-tools-industry, the whole tool is usually brass.

Yeah, I doubt a partial brass tool would pass safety standards at a site that requires them. My thought is that perhaps someone used a non-sparking part in a rebuild.

I took it apart today. color is solid... Definitely supposed to be that way, not painted.. I like that it's not common..... I didn't know there were different material options for rebuild kits?

I suspect it is a gold,irriadating rust preventative coating/plating.
Like the gold color on grade 8 bolts
