That's the truth. I think nearly every household in Mac Tools territory had some wood handled Mac screwdrivers thirty years ago. That's the image that came to mind when I thought of the word screwdriver when I was a kid.

When did Stanley tools aquire Mac? I have one wooden screwdriver, and I know they were common up through WWII. I am sure a lot were made after, but I know the whole plastics craze took off in the 50's.

If we could age one of these, it might be back when Mac tools, was actually Mac tools.

stanley bought mac in 1984. i bought a wood handled set in the 80's.

they are also still in the matco 1984 catalog.

Old Thread, but we never answered who made the wood handled screwdrivers for Mac. The reason I bring this up is because I just acquired some older wood handled Irwins (I assume they are old because they have the Phillips license stamped on the shank).

My Questions:

Did Irwin make wood handle screwdrivers for Mac and Craftsman (maker code DL)?

What time period was the Phillips license stamped on the shank?

This may sound like a shocker but I know who made the screwdrivers for Mac. Mechanics tool and forge made the screwdrivers for Mac and the company was located in the same city as Mac Sabina ohio and mechanics tool and forge was later bought out by mac so the early screwdrivers were made by mechanics tool and forge and the later ones were technically made by Mac because they bought the company out. Hope this helps you out.

My theory is there was one and only one company who made and supplied the hardwood handles found on Mac, Craftsman DL, Irwin and Grace screwdrivers. I think it was a predecessor company of Maine Wood Concepts.

As a kid some 30 or so years ago I had Buffalo brand wood-handled screwdrivers that looked a lot like Irwin and Mac. They were junk.

I still have some of those same Buffalo screwdrivers, I think they're buried in the bottom of a box somewhere. They may be junk, but they're good to use as loaners.

I bought a set of Mac wood handle drivers around 1981. I still have several of them. The guy I worked for back then used them a lot. They were pretty good drivers but not my favorite.

I have a small number of Mac wood handled screwdrivers, really like them, and according to the Mac truck guys, they were never a warrentable item. Mac no longer sells them. Lots of mechanics used them back in the day. Some claimed they worked better when hands were oily.

i have 2 MAC wooden handle flat heads, i was trying to date them and failing, the only difference betwixt the two is one is only marked by the word "MAC" and the other has sabina,O beneather MAC.
I had thought they were definately older than the 80's - I have the MAC 1990 catalog, ill see if they were still present in the 90's when i get a chance.
