Mac Tool cabinet handle screws

Want to add this handle to my box top lid. What kind of screws are used? I saw in a thread mention of #8 hex head sheet metal screws..they don't seem to thread in. Tried #8-32 screws. The screws don't start...Am i supposed to just drive them in? Does it need threaded?

Ayuh,.... Take the handle with ya to a better hardware store, find their screw index, 'n keep tryin' screws til ya find the 1s that fit,.....

Tried that...the #8-32 seemed to fit on the screw index. At home the screws don't thread in. Maybe i will try another store. The store index screw is probably pretty worn and the new screw threads a little too much. Thanks

don't rule out the possibility of them being metric . like said above, go to a real hardware store .

This was my exact thought- ill bet the index is all buggered up. Go to the screw bins and just try brand new screws until you find the right one. Dont forget fine versus course threads, and it totally could be metric.

I'll echo the metric comments and add that an M4 x .7mm thread isn't very far off from the #8-32 you felt was promising.

I checked mine and the screws thread in an 8-32 die just fine. Maybe your handle threads need cleaned.

I got bit by this exact size years ago... It's why I invested in Thread Checkers.

That said.

I agree.... the threads in the handle probably need a clean... or chase with a thread restorer BUT make sure you are using the right size first. It's pretty easy to chase an 8-32 with a M4 chaser.
