I have a few thousand in MAC Tools, I only have one tool that I wasn't happy with. I also have a MAC MB1600 rollaway with a MB1760 Hang on Cabinet that I have been happy with for more than 25 years. I have far more ******* in my Snap-On tools and Tool Boxes. No complaints from me on MAC Tools.

Can't post any pictures, but I have a few. I always thought MAC was a good company with good tools and in my opinion, one of the very best tool boxes. I am not wrapped up into owning a classy expensive box, rather invest in the tools, but if I did have money to blow, a Maximizer box would be on my bucket list.

Agree with you on the boxes...IMO they don't have the "Image" that Snappy does, but IMHO the Tech Series is MUCH better then a KRA, and very affordable (talking truck boxes here), and a downright steal when I see what they go for on CL. The Macsimizers are just plain head of the class in every way.

I'd trade off my KRL for a Macsimizer any day, any time.

I picked up a few Mac wrenches today. I got a 11, a 13, and a 14 mm. One thing I noticed is that the 11 has a k2 stamped on it, the 13 has a k3 stamped on it, and the 14 has a k4 stamped on it. What is the difference in these markings?

Here are the wrenches I bought yesterday:

All Mac - 1 13/16" (CL58) - 11mm (M11CW) - 13mm (M13CW) - 14mm (M14CW)

Not a very good pic. But thanks to rhastings80 for posting that link. The metrics are 1984/1985 and the big one is 1985/1986. Thanks again for the link!

This site has the date codes. Think Number and then a K means 2010/2011 for year made. Kn = 1984/1985. Think the N may mean which quarter of the year it was made but just a guess.

I would call that a damn good deal. 11 pliers + bag for $100. That is under $10 a piece.

I have a good amount of MAC in my box and used to buy when I had a dealer around. Never let me down and I felt were good quality and less than Snap On by a good amount. No complaints.

Just got them but they seem to be just like sunex, grey pneumatic, Matco adv stuff. The price on them is very very good if you were just starting out and had a Mac guy these would be a no brainer to buy all your sockets to get going and still have a truck warranty. It's quite a complete set goes to 15 mm in metric came with that nice rail system, claimed retail was only like 70 bucks for all those sockets

I'm trying to beat up my driver on a set of those screwdrivers.

I need another set of screwdrivers out in my garage...I'd love this set of new MAC's but I'm hoping & praying they release a Green handled set. In the absence of green handles, I'll probably go lower end drivers for now, thinking of trying the Milwaukee set. I already have the Macsimizers, SO, and Whia drivers...pretty well covered "ICE"...in case of emergency...

I can only assume they will be retiring the Macsimizer design in favor of this new design? I know some of the less common Macsimizer designs like the Robertson/Square are already NLA.

I've been researching some new Phillips drivers and these new Macs look awesome, thanks for sharing.

I have also been eyeing a new set of reversible combination wrenches and Stuey (Toolguyd) highly recommended the new Proto reversible full polish I-Beam wrenches. This mac thread had me check out their site and I noticed that the Mac version of the same wrenches are way less expensive. Am I missing something?

JSCVM-14SA.png

Now I realize that the Mac set runs from 8-19mm (no drops) and the Proto set also includes 6&7mm but the cheapest I could find them online still had the Protos at $150 more.

I ask my GJ brothers, are these not the same wrenches (Stanley Group) and if so the Mac set looks to be pretty good value.

The Protos look nice too (my preference)

21HP40_AS01.JPG

With Mac catering to the auto industry they have hex bolsters. The Proto's don't, but judging by the picture the larger flat heads come with square shanks for greater torsional strength. Perhaps the shank diameter on the Phillips are slightly larger than the respective Macs for the same reason--greater torsional strength. Interestingly these "new" series are no where to be found on Proto's website. :headscrat

The Proto ratcheting wrenches are quite different from the Mac Precision Torque. The Protos are made in the USA (not sure whether that includes the parts for the ratcheting mechanism), so that's part of the reason why they are more expensive.

Initial inspection suggested that they were extremely similar. It has been quite difficult actually to find high resolution images online to provide an opportunity to compare the Protos and the Macs. Nonetheless, it does appear that there are a number of differences. I was thrown off by the Precision Torque combination (non-ratcheting) wrenches in the same image. As they appear to have all of the same features as the Proto except the ratcheting mechanism of course. In the end a quick call to Mac Tools did confirm that the COO of the featured Mac Tools reversible Precision Torque wrenches is Taiwan. This was a huge disappointment as they are expensive glorified GearWrenches at this point.

Good catch Superautobacs!

I like that the new Proto Screwdrivers come in a all phillips pack or a all slotted pack.

I am looking at the phillips pack 6 piece

It has
#0 x 3"
#1 x 3"
#2 x 2.5"
#2 x 4"
#3 x 6"
#4 x 8"

For $150

How so? Just because of COO?
Personally, I'd hop on the MAC truck and fondle them before making any determination...my MAC Edge Impact sockets are Taiwan, I LOVE LOVE LOVE Em.
I suppose I could said they were just Glorified HF Impact Sockets if COO is the sole determining factor of purchase :dunno:

I wont BS anybody...I've got my share of imported MAC Stuff in my boxes...BUT all of it has been of excellent quality and I can not complain about it. I shop based on the merit and quality of the tool and the support behind it vs COO.

Flippin,

The Stanley empire doesn't jive with the Gearwrench crew. :D Gearwrench is a registered trademark owned by Easco (Easco was taken over by Danaher in 1989)

Based on my observations the OEM for ratcheting wrenches/mechanisms:
Gearwrench is produced by Lee Way (Taiwan) and Sata (China) and is used (not exclusively) by the Apex group (formerly Danaher)

Kabo and Hi-Five (both Taiwan) are used (not exclusively) by the Stanley group (Mac / Proto / Facom / etc)

There are several other manufacturers in Taiwan that produce ratcheting wrenches (Infar, Chang Loon, Ru Shine, Cendai, and probably others) and there are differences in the product as far as fit and finish goes.

The ratcheting wrenches are similar to Facom ones if they are not same!
The "traditional" wrenches look like Facom 440 or Toptul ones

Yes, the ratcheting wrenches practically are:
facom-ratcheting-combination-wrenches-metric.jpg

The combination wrenches share close similarities. I believe it all started off with Toptul's announcement of their new wrenches a few years ago. After them, the Facom version followed, then the Mac, then the Proto.

Maybe I don't have any mac because I don't have a mac driver. Just a snap on driver. This is my only mac item to date. I haven't even used it yet. I am waiting for the spring to start some interior work on my own Vette for a change.
