If there's one thing I can give Snap-on credit for, is having the guts to round off the price to the nearest dollar. MAC has to put 99 cents on the end of everything. When the price gets up over 500 dollars, do they really need the other 99 cents? Why not make it $506.00 if they need the money that bad?

What does it matter, if you pay list price for tool truck tools, you're a fool. If you are buying online, look at Proto, I believe they are the same wrench these days, different name stamped on it. Mac wrenches have changed. The beams are now rounded and not squared off like historically.

The 99 cents added on is chickenchit and aggravating.

MAC still makes the square beams for the extra long.

My uncle who used to work with a guy who always ate lunch at the same place as the nephew of a lady who did taxes for a Regional Manager told me that Snap On invests that extra $9.01 into getting their detents exactly perfect.

It’s just a psychological marketing tactic. Although it’s more likely to work on something that’s $499.99 or even just $499 because some people (not me, I’m cheap) see the 4 and it makes the purchase easier than if they saw the 5.

It's a marketing tactic that should be left to consumer items like chicken soup, not a professional tool brand, but I get your point.

Snap-On used to have the CAT part numbers listed on their website so you could see what they were charging Caterpillar to resell wrenches... 4 way angle wrenches none more than $10, if the price ends in a .99 or a .00 what does it matter, you're still paying a 10x markup

So math tells me you think that set of wrenches is only worth $50. :D

Everything I have seen on the truck is rounded now, even up to the 2" wrench on the truck.

No, Merk is right. The extra longs still have the squared beam. I actually didn't like them and the open ends are very fat to boot. After trying them all ended up sticking with Snap-On and Matco XLs (Armstrong).

I always thought the .99, .98, .97, .96, .95, etc. thing was kind of silly. Do they really think they're fooling anyone?

In other news, I hear HF's new Icon line of hand tools will all end in .72, just to f'ck with people on this forum...

Good, I was worried that i was the only one that thought $500 for that set of wrenches was craziness. :wtf:

Are you saying that if i buy them, use them hard for three years and then change jobs, i won’t be able to get $475 for them??? :bounce::bounce:

in a nutshell, no.

this post made me think of the wrench sets i purchased in 2018. i think the most expensive one was the Milwaukee set that runs 8-22 mm for about $125.

The others, Sonic, Dewalt, Toptul, Tekton, and OEM were at or well under $100.

Snap-on also doesn't screw you for shipping when you order direct (under $500). There is enough markup to begin with and MAC is going to want $30 to UPS that wrench set to you. That is insult to injury.

My uncle who used to work with a guy who always ate lunch at the same place as the nephew of a lady who did taxes for a Regional Manager told me that Snap On invests that extra $9.01 into getting their detents exactly perfect.

That's awesome.

Unless I’m mistaken I’m fairly certain my snap-on truck prices are including tax and my Mac guy will always tell me a price and then my receipt will add tax on top of that. Not a fan of that business model usually you want straightforward from your tool truck franchisee but oh well just kinda nitpicking

99 cent pricing is one my least favorite marketing techniques. I know it works psychologically and it doesn't matter because I almost always pay with a card but it still looks wrong.

On another note, that is an incredible amount of money for a set of wrenches that small. I guess I haven't paid much attention to prices in a few years but prices like that are insane.

I'll still be the guy buying 10 USA-made wrenches at the flea market for $25. Sometimes less than that.

I still pay $500, I just get 20 sets of wrenches for the price the tool truck buyer pays for 1 set! :)

People are soft in the head if they're paying £500 for a set of spanners.

All of my sets put together probably come to just about that.

Sometimes the cents are used to indicated stock status in retail. For years Costco has used .97 to indicate items no longer stocked for example.

https://cons.wonderhowto.com/how-t...costcos-prices-get-even-better-deals-0150500/
I wa going to explain this same thing.

Most grocery stores work like this

Sears does it on everything.
$**.88 means clearanced and not stocked anymore
$**.98
$**.97
$**.7x
All have specific meanings. Be an so long since I shopped at sears, I can't remember them

He who dies with the most toys, leaves the most **** for GJers to buy at .0025 cents on the $1.00 when his kids have an estate sale...

The cycle must continue

I would be more concerned with the 3 figures in front of the .99 .
100 to 200 bucks can buy equal or better from germany or taiwan .

I'm still searching for a Chinese/Taiwan made socket with the detents in the correct spot. And believe it or not, I'll actually be happy when I find one. :)
