hi all,

i bought this old mac tools bench grinder. the fellow i bought it from is in his late 70's and said he had bought it new. it spins up fast and is very smooth sounding. and it is Heavy.

it is missing the end caps on each side and the platform to rest what you are grinding.

i bought this one and my son in law bought an old craftsman block grinder.

i just fell in like with this one. it looks cool and runs great.

i couldnt find any info using the model number stamped on it.

anyone here have any info on it and a guess on age?

thanks

tom

Looks like it might be a Baldor. If so, you should be able to buy the missing pieces. Shame the owner didn't keep them.

i was going to ask him tomorrow if he still had them stuck in a drawer somewhere.

i thought baldor was just the motor manufacturer?

Baldor makes motors and very motor concentric tools such as bench grinders and belt sanders. I'd guess around early 70's. Call Mac tomorrow with the serial number they might be able (willing?) to help you find some information. You could make the rests pretty easily, although it would be nice if he had the originals. The end caps might be a bit more difficult and costly to locate.

mac tools responded today and said it was pre 1977 and they had no info or parts for it. and they suggested i contact baldor.

i probably wont spend 150 bucks on a few replacement parts. i can live without the endcaps and i can fab some tool rests for it.

it is a working piece, not a show piece.

thanks

Tom,

Are you sure that model had end covers originally? I don't see any bosses where the attachment screws would go.

Where do all the tool rests go?

I'll bet lunch there are more used grinders missing tools rest than not.

i think you are totally right on most used ones missing parts.

i am still excited i found it. i paid 50 for it and i needed a medium sized grinder. there is something really cool and nostalgic about it and the feel and sound of it is like the sound of a 2 stroke detroit diesel.....just plain ol cool.

there is the screw ports for the end caps but i dont really care about them. i will probably fab some spark arrestors and tool rest. that will be easy.
