I'm thinking about gold plating the tool kit in my Porsche, not sure what the big deal is, gold plating isn't expensive as long as it thin. Last engine built in the shop had every bracket, bolt, nut, etc cadmium plated. I admire it, but don't have plans to follow it.

Silver jethot on the headers is very nice though.

Are they really tools if they are gold-plated and in a walnut display case? Kinda like a concours-winning car that goes place to place in an enclosed, climate controlled trailer...that really isn't a car anymore, it's a piece of sculpture.

I have a MAC 3/8 ratchet sitting in a black velvet box on my desk. It's a Dale Earnhardt 1993 Winston Cup special edition. It has no real value to me,except that it's a NOS MAC ratchet, but I have been hesitant to use it. I took it apart and lubed the guts the other night and plan to use it next time I work on my car...it's a tool, use it. Can you imagine teh weird looks you'd get using gold-plated tools in a shop environment...that's as goofy as that blue titanium finish that Sears was pushing.

I think I have seen the peak of stupid.
frankly most of those gold or titanium plated tools could be used and if you are carefull enough you could do so without hurting them. way back when I bought 2 of the 70th anniversary SO ratcheting screwdrivers. one to keep and one to use. on the one I have been using the plating is still in pretty good shape.

Ya well I have been e-bidding on mac gearless ratchets awhile now. Rather uncommon, these have not much come onto the secondary market. Last couple I bid on were real grubby and beat up.

I just won and recieved a set of the gold plated for quite a bit less than I was in on the beat up ones I did not get. Strange! So now I have a mint set of gold plated tools that were a mite stiff, but are now well lubricated and I plan on being 'that guy' who actually dared to use/mess up a perfect set,etc. The fit and finish on these is flawless, naturally, another bonus.

With the soft grip and strategic placement of the plating, I can actually use these without touching the gold with either hand or socket. And I love the gearless. Using these will prompt me to carpet my work space more consistently which will protect the chrome finish on all my tools. Hate bouncing wrenches on the concrete floor so I have been using carpet scraps and also pillows for under car comfort.

So there! A good rationale for the getting of gold plated tools. Seems goofy to me as well, especially the taps and chisels, obviously not meant to be used. How about a ruler, calipers, level, gasket scraper handle, safety glasses and case. I can think of so many things a gold plated finish would actually be anti corrosive and or just classy to use. Too bad it was palmed off as a cheesey novelty. Love the gearless though.

I bought the gold MAC locking 3/8" ratchet extension kit for my stepkid (kind of as a joke since he works on trucks in a gold mine). He told me he uses them every day. They're not exactly in NIB condition anymore

No, that was the later auction. Mine was earlier and priced lower, but with shipping cost more, I swear! So I have used 'em. Sure are great wrenches and I actually like the Gold. Now I am wondering if the plating is on top of, say nickel, as is done in the industry.

Ya well the box on another zero degree ratchet I have, not gold plated, has made in Taiwan on it. Wrench has no country of origin stamp on it. Safe to assume they are all made in Taiwan.
So the Chinese probably have a lot more Gold than the US (audit Ft Knox)and there is no reason to doubt they will do a good enough job plating these wrenches. Another reason to buy used, to not support the Chicoms.

Cadmium plating is an industrial protective coating that is corrosion resistant. It has nothing to do with looks. A lot of jet engine hardware still has cadmium plating although there's a move to get away from it due to health/environmental concerns.

I used to sell those kits.. If I remembeR correctly, they were only a little more than the other normal versions on my truck. I only sold them to one guy. He filled his $30,000 commemorative snap on tool box set with them.

I only will work on my own personal bike with gold plated tools. I keep it real clean and never want to touch it with chrome or any other type tools.



AWE ok, just kidding. I bought my 1st gold plated ratchet wrenches after seeing them go around twice on ebay with no bids. The 3rd time I bought them and they were cheaper than chrome ones delivered. Then I started watching for more and scored the DBE set, 4 for $35 delivered. The day after I got them in the mail I go to a flea market and see the exact same set for $20 (no shipping necessary) so I had to buy them. My intentions all along were to use them since they were the cheapest way for me to get ratchet wrenches but my friends keep telling me I'd be crazy to start using them. Since then ratcheting wrenches have gotten much cheaper and come on sale regularly so I've bought more extensive sets of chrome ones and have no need to use these gold ones now.

You have to watch out for fakes that say "Gold Plated" because the fakes mean they are plated with some type of gold coloured plating. Real gold plated tools will tell if it's 22 Karat or 24 Karat gold etc. right on the package.

I was in a pawn shop the other week and they had a Popular Mechanics 24k gold ratchet/socket set in a wooden box with a glass lid. I thought it was odd since I thought PM was a Walmart brand.

I like the chrome look much better. But if I need the tool, and the gold ones are cheaper...

I feel like I'd have to of been employed by the tool company before I'd desire to own any of their gold commemorative tools with no intent on using them.

A few years ago my mom bought somebodys storage unit and she found a gold plated Snap-On impact gun in a velvet lined hardwood case.
She asked me if i wanted it but at the time i didnt realize what i could have sold it for.....
She sold it to some guy in Japan for $1000 on eBay.
