Sent an old Mac ratchet in for repair or replacement. This is the ******** peice of **** they sent back in return. It's made in Taiwan, feels rough and chrome looks like something that cost 2 dollars. The lever is extremely hard to move (maybe some grease will help) has 45 teeth (replaced a fine tooth) and the action feels like something from the flea market. They don't have jack **** on Duralast or even some Harbor Freight. I emaile MAC and told them to send my old ratchet back and they could have this thing back. I knew MAC was on a downward spiral but they have officially crashed and burned. MAC Tools RIP

Sad to say, but until Stanley is out of the picture, I think this is how Mac will be. I do sincerely hope that they can somehow pull themselves out of this mess, but I'm not betting on it.

I just can't wait to see what the stuff I just sent in gets replaced with.

I'm curious to see if they will do that. I'd be surprised if they do though, because I doubt they have a system in place to set aside an old ratchet with someone's name on it in case they want it back.

On a side note, I just returned a 17-year-old Gerber multi-tool for warranty replacement and they have the option of sending your old one back to you with an "x" stamped on it (to indicate that it is no longer under warranty) along with a new replacement (the new replacement carries the normal lifetime warranty), if you inform them that your old one has "sentimental value". I thought that was right neighborly of them.

And from your signature line:

What about your Gearwrench experience?

To be honest I try not to get into a huge blamming about tool companies but god. I havent seen a decent mac tool that I looked at and said "hey this is worth not spending the extra 5% for a snap on one." Like I told our former mac dealer when he showed up. If I wanted to buy a mac tool, I'd go to wal mart.

That ratchet head looks an awful lot like the Stanley that's sold for pretty cheap at WM. For the few bucks that WM prices them at, it's a pretty good deal.

I'll bet MAC is peddling that for A WHOLE LOT more though.

I'll open it up tommorow and get some photos. I had to laugh when the UPS man delivered it in a recycled Fed-Ex box thats about bigger than a med USPS flat rate box. I bet shipping it cost 2X what the ratchet did. I wouldn't pay 5 dollars a peice for them if I found a table full of them at the Flea market if I to use it. The handle is uncomfortable as the knurling is at each end of the grip and tears into the side of your hands because it dips right past the knurl.

I have some older round-head Mac ratchets. One was my dad's. :( They are stuck, and I had hoped I could find a rebuild kit. I wouldn't want ANY replacement for his rat...just a kit. But a PRC rat exchange? No thanks.

Oh jeez I hope I don't get something like this in return for the busted flex-head I sent them. How long did it take for you to get it after you sent the old one in?

If they had sent you an XRR10PA ratchet would you have been happier with your warranty experience?

http://www.mactools.com/product/tabid/120/p-320795-xrr10pa.aspx

It looks to be a fine tooth round head ratchet, but I can't tell where it's made.

I assume they no longer made a ratchet rebuild kit for the broken one you sent in?

I agree the made in Taiwan ratchet is disappointing. But at least they did send a replacement. Mac could have definitely done better and replaced your ratchet with something better in their offerings.

Something that puzzles me though that I have noticed on this board, if Snap On or Mac makes a tool in Taiwan, it's regarded as ****. Yet when a Taiwan tool is found at Harbor Freight, most everyone agrees that it's better than the made in China or Pakistan stuff. Just an observation.

That being said, if you decide to keep the ratchet, I'm sure a lot of us here would like to see it tested the same way the Duralast and other similar ratchets have been tested here.

They're made in Italy. It's the Facom 72-tooth design, since Stanley now owns Facom.

To the OP:

What's the part number? I wanted to look up the specs/price on the Mac website.

EDIT-- MSRP is $62 for that ratchet. Ugh.

That ratchet is no longer in production according to MAC.

truck brand price and Taiwan or China COO does not compute with me. You can buy a similar Stanley ratchet off Amazon for $13.

That's because it depends on the reference point, i.e., the consensus seems to be that Taiwan is good compared to China or Pakistan, but not so good compared to the best of the USA Snap-on or Mac stuff. Also, there is the price. The consensus seems to be that Taiwan quality at China or Pakistan prices is good. Taiwan quality at USA Snap-on or USA Mac prices is bad.

I find that hard to believe. Did Mac tell you that by phone or email? It's still available to buy on the website.

I just got the 1/4" drive version as a warranty replacement a couple months ago. Another member here (kirbot I believe) just got a flex head version from Mac in the last week or so.

I saw the XRR10PA that kirbot got in exchange for the flex head and it looked like the one in the link a lot nicer than the POS u received

Poor Mac. Looks like specialty tools, sockets , Knuckle Savers and a handful of other tools are getting to be the only things worth buying.

I have nothing against the Taiwan part of it except MAC sells it for 64 dollars. I have a few Taiwan ratchets I really like. I am especially fond of the Taiwan Duralast. But here we have a Tool truck brand ratchet that sells for 3X the Duralast, 7-8X the price of a Harbor Freight Chrome SO knock off and isn't close to the quality of the Duralast. I use Duralast to compare because it is also made it Taiwan and is of very nice quality. The HF 8 dollar ratchet has a better feel, smoother action and a much nicer finish. It's a real POS

Over the phone, I was pushing for the Facom head. According to them (same person told me KRL boxes were made in Taiwan, Dual80 internal were made in France and Matco imports all their tools) the Facom headed ratchets were axe several weeks before. I'm calling them back, I find this ratchet totally unacceptable. They can refund me the 60 something dollars I paid for my old one back in 1992

Depending on vintage they could be S-K or New Britain rather than MAC. If you post up pictures or part #s folks will be able to tell you which you're dealing with.

$hit. I have a 1981/82 Mac vr10 with some chrome peel on the sharp edges of the head that I was gonna send in. It should be replaced with a vr11 but now you all got me scared. I would hate to pay to ship it back and get some POS chicom replacement. Does anyone know if the new vr's are usa??

I would think getting less tooth count in exchange is basically fraud. After all, pricing basically followed tooth count for years and years. You got screwed and shouldn't take it.

It's a crapshoot - last time I was on the truck, some was USA, some was Taiwan, some stuff was Chinese, and some was India.

I personally like the Pakistani stuff - I've got a 7/16" drillbit that I bent while drilling through 1/8" plate. I like the looks people give me when they see it.

So much for me ever guying another new Mac tool. I have a channel lock ratchet that I swear the head is identical to that one.

I think you're missing the point. Many of us here, my self most definitely included, will buy an Asian tool, IF we can get it for an ASIAN price.

I buy a fair amount of HF stuff. Some of it, especially recently, is pretty decent, serviceable stuff. Some of it is even better than recent Craftsman offerings. That being said, if a HF tool was even 25% of the price of a comparable SO tool, I would not even consider it.

That's a shame. I've only had a couple of older loose MAC sockets... nothing special.

I picked up a set of MAC short combination wrenches this weekend (I'd guess they're probably 5-10 years old) and was VERY impressed. They're like jewelery, perfect chrome and all the edges are smooth... it's too bad they're apparently gone to ****.
