Im a veteran to by the way too, got shot right in the *** and have the hole to prove it.

Seriously though, noone twisted my arm behind my back and said I had to serve my country like they did in the old days and I have little sympathy for the crybabies we have today using the veterans card just to gain some sympathy.

Deal with Nam and then come home and cry about issues Ok.

Easy there. It is sad, to me, and very unfortunate that they had to bring the war back with them, and werent (from what I heard) exactly welcomed home with fine cigars, Champagne, and all.

Let's pretend at the time Harbor Freight didn't exist, would you had then been happy with that $14 price?

This is the point I have been trying to share with others. It only seems overpriced when someone undercuts and slashes prices......also, if we could see inside the ropes to see what it took from mining the ore to delivering the tool to your doorstep- we may come away with a different point of view!

panknuckshovel, nice humor there!

You obviously haven't been on a Mac tools truck in the past 5 years. There are some USA made products, but the vast majority of the newer products are Asian. I can't see paying snap on prices for Asian products.

And how does that pertain to Mac Tools?

You said you cant see paying snap on prices for Asian products.. There are snap on tools made in an Asian country. Do you just shy away from those particular items??

Also Mac tends to be a little less in price than snap on.

Sorry but the Mac guy was plain out of line. I was brought up to respect my elders. And I don't know why anyone would defend him. It's called customer service, it's a big part of running a business. I do acknowledge that this may not be the whole story but if it is the op should be angry.

Your assuming on what was said and not said.

I to was raised to respect elders BUT I was also taught that respect is a two way street. So just because someone is an elder does that give them the right to walk over people?? No.

We are talking hand tools here, bit sockets to be exact. Snap On, is USA, Mac, I have seen plenty of Taiwan or China.

For the most part I agree with what your saying. Yes it is a two may street in most cases. But the Mac guy has a business to run with I'm assuming a family to feed and he's getting angry at a older gentlemen with sticker shock? As a mechanic I literally get pissed about once a day at some ignorant a-hole but if I was to lash out at someone I'm in the wrong no matter what because I'm the professional. I'm the one risking mine and my families well-being.

Idk I just get reminded of our snap on guy when I read how he reacted to him. I know he would do the same thing. He's always up on his high horse. All other tools are junk. He dissed a guy with a craftsman impact one time. He's always threatening he's going to get fired because we don't buy enough stuff. If he does get fired its because nobody likes him not because we're too cheap to buy his tools

Depends what sets you look at. The torx and hex sets with black bits are USA made. Silver bits are VIM rebadges but they're also priced accordingly comparative to USA Snap-On.

Don't throw the Vet Card. Your Military Service has nothing to do with buying a hex bit or tool truck pricing. As someone who spent 25.5 years in the Army at the pointy end of the spear, I cannot stand it when people tie their military service into every aspect of daily life when they're unhappy.
At the end of the day, you're not going to buy MAC tools and the dealer lost a sale. Move on, there's nothing to see here.

+1

The vet card should not even be in this discussion.

Amen, and thanks for your service (from another combat vet.)

It ain't 'selfless service' if you use it to try and get everyone to tilt ****** to you every time you want something.

~Tejaas~

Couldn't agree more. I'm a Vet. I'm partially disabled too.
You won't hear me asking for a discount. I'll take one at HD or Lowes, but only because I know they offer it. I won't ask for every single purchase.

The status of being a Veteran, should be held as a pretty high honor to that Veteran, so why demean it over a hex bit? :dunno: Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure all of us Vets have been treated with greater insults while in service. If I'm dealing with a jerk in the civilian world I'll simply take my business elsewhere as he's not worth my time.

I hate seeing those parking spaces at Harris Teeter's grocery stores: "Veterans Parking Only". Yes I'm a Veteran, but no I won't park there.

If I'm disabled to the point I need to park closer, I'll use the handicapped parking space. If not? I'll park where I can find a space, just like everyone else. No need to look for special favors. I came back to move on with my life, not to milk it for closer parking.

Any conflict after that well sorry about your loss ( and I truly do mean that ) but you signed up and Im pretty sure it wasnt for your countrys best interest, there were perks, either free education, some sort of a stable salary, a chance at a career, training to have a career in the civilian world, to get a life......the list could go on and so something happened to you over there...Ok you rolled the dice and you didnt come out smelling like roses as you thought you would, that dosent entitle you to the spot up front at lowes ( unless you truly are handicapped ) just cause you served, thats all Im sayin

I think there are more of us that sat and watched buildings topple and ran off to a recruiter than those of us who sat and thought how great leaving our families to possibly stand in fire, volunteering knowing what the guys look like after suicide bombs and ieds.

But your right completely selfish reasons that all of us modern veterans had for joining.

I am going to go out on a limb and say he was probably talking about the people who joined the military for the sole purpose of getting an education DURING NO TIME OF WAR...

He worded it "any conflict after"

This is the propaganda of the growing anti veteran sentiment being spread. Part of the propaganda labeling veterans as burdens of the state. Typical brainwashed masses

Because Vietnam was the last major conflict where the USA had a draft.. Which is why (once again going out on a limb) he said they are the one who could ***** about it since A.) Draft says whether you like it or not you go. B.) When they returned home they where not greated by such an enthusiastic crowd.

But doesnt matter about when you served, using your service to justify being a jerk to others is unacceptabl..

I agree there are only a few times to play the vet card. But reread his statement. I don't know anyone that lasted in the air force who signed up only for the education. You have to have a certain amount of honor and duty to put up with what you have to put up with.

I won't play my veteran card but I will not stand by and watch this anti veteran movement gain steam. It's a growing problem and this guys ignorant statement is the stuff at the core.

Back on topic pm me if you really want to discuss further

You choose to sell premium products at premium prices for a living to random people, then you get offended when someone is offended by your prices. This is a recipe for failure as a business owner. The tool truck driver was out of line period. Provoked or not, you are representing a premium brand and YOUR own business you need to act professionally at all times (unless it gets downright ugly). The dealer just lost a customer and possibly a customer to the brand for life, with his childish behavior. Just because Kenship1 did not like the price on that socket, doesn't mean he won't need something exclusive or clearly best in class being sold by MAC in the future.

Now sure the best response from Kenship1 would have been to simply be polite and leave the truck or just ask if he can do any better on the price. But no he spoke his mind.... You know what, that tool truck driver has access to other brands of tools, if he was smart he would have offered a different brand at a better price. That's what a real business minded and focused tool truck dealer should do. For all intents and purposes its just a damn socket, almost any decent brand will do the job most of the time.

And I dont disagree with you on the anti-vet movement.

The the reason I am "going out on a limb" is to give the poster the benifit of the doubt that he may have not worded it right. Give him either an opportunity to clarify, correct, or stick with his words.

But anything further than what has already been posted in reguards to the OP, the subject is beat to a horse now. Unless the OP wants to chime in again, time to live and learn.

Poor form referencing HF, but it sounds like a tightly wound MAC guy. He Should have handled it differently like others have said; it was a missed opportunity to educate a prospective customer. If it was just him, he could behave however he likes I suppose, but he is representing MAC, so he would have to adhere to certain guidelines I would imagine.

There's probably not a single topic about which GJ members would universally agree, but the value of a quality tool is as close as it gets. I'm shocked the OP would expect much commiseration from the members here.

Let's get real, any nutsack that walks onto a tool truck using Harbor Freight pricing as their benchmark is never going to be "educated". The OP made a mockery of the tool guy's business and the tool guy made a mockery of him. :dunno: I can't tell you how many people I get a week balking at the pricing of my high quality products when their benchmark is some low end junk on Amazon! These people are price shoppers, not value shoppers. Price shoppers are cheap asses that don't care about quality, service, or convenience. Value shoppers take the aforementioned factors into consideration and purchase the product that best suits their needs. The OP is just bitching because he got a taste of his own medicine.

Maybe unclear and I apologize if I ruffled your feathers, difficult to cover all aspects and scenarios and understandably a touchy subject for some.

As far as anti sentiment I know nothing about it, todays modern veteran has opportunities that in the past would not have been considered and yet as is commonplace amongst the lazy self interested society we have become some of us still moan about not haven been given enough.

Tell that to the Vietnam vet who had a pineapple stuck up his ***.

Before I take a beating like the original poster should get Ill bow out of this one.

Don't know squat about the OP or any tool truck drivers period. Maybe there was more to the conversation than was stated, maybe not....However, I can't believe the people on here defending the drivers' (i.e. business owner, salesman) being a ***** to a potential customer. A shrewd business person would have realized the situation for what it was.....as an opportunity to gain a new customer (or at least make a sale) by informing the OP of the benefit of his product vs. the HF offering. At worst, the OP should have walked away empty handed without feeling the need to post a negative rant on GJ. Perhaps this in general is the mentality of most tool truck drivers. It seems that there is always talk on the forums about how few decent ones there are out and about. I work in petrochem and am responsible for buying quite a bit of equipment and tools (granted, not my own $) from an assortment of vendors. If I was spoken to by a vendor...even remotely... In the manner suggested by the OP, that'd be the last time they ever were allowed to do BUSINESS WITH ME. I am the customer and they need me more so than I them. Not that I make a habit of being rude, however if machine shop A is quoting the fabrication of a 6-1/8" slugging wrench at $3500 and I inform him that machine shop B can fabricate it for $2300, I don't expect to be ridiculed and harassed for mentioning it.

Machine shop b uses tin cans, old fence wire, and anything else that melts in their product. It looks nice, but won't last if used more than once and you both know it from past experience. Machine shop b laughs you out of their shop and a week later you are fired because your rig was down a week longer than it should have been because of your choices. Obviously that wouldn't likely happen since you know your suppliers, and they know not to sell junk to a serious customer who is going to use the tools. Anyhow it's a more true comparison.

A tool truck business is different than a regular store and the customers for a tool truck are for PROFESSIONAL mechanics, not the DiY type.

And this talk about the tool truck driver lost a potential customer... How in the hell do you consider the OP to be a potential customer??? By that logic its like saying a person on a KIA budget is a potential customer for Jaguar.. Lets face it, some people will be perfectly fine with Harbor Frieght tools and there is nothing wrong with that, but dont go on a tool truck if your price expectation is HF.. Stop wasting your time and the drivers time when he/she has customers that are willing to pay for said tools.

Sheesh, I thought men were not supposed to ***** and moan like this.. What have the times brought us????

i guess it's just another case of politeness and courtesy going to **** in our society. But then again, these drivers and their tools seem to be afforded godlike status by many so what's a little ridicule towards the unknowing (and possibly ignorant concerning quality tools) rube off of the street. Basically all I'm saying is that decency doesn't cost a thing and in most cases is better than being a ****. Obviously not a view held by all.

This.

Call me an elitist if you want, but tool truck services are not taylored to the average Joe. The business is revolved around servicing professionals. There is no mention of "general public service", and I am sure that the dealers will not lose a single second of sleep by denying a non repeating, price shopping, one time purchase "customer".

When I first stepped on the Snap-on truck (found it parked in a plaza) the dealer informed me (even though I was in coveralls) that no transaction can be made until I am on his list of calls. No hard feelings, that simply meant I'd have to wait until he visits my workplace, which he did the next day.

1. No, its not different than a regular store, especially when you are willing to let them come on the truck and spend money.
2. Tell the MAC driver about the bitching and moaning.
3. You guys can come up with whatever kind of hypothetical nonsense you want. People keep saying he went on the truck to "waste time." Have you thought for just a second maybe his response was because he didnt have a clue the price would be so high and was that taken back by it? You know what it doesnt even matter. Forget that I asked. You dont speak to elders like that. Period. I don't care which one of you "men" think you are justified to do it. If you call yourself men and act like that then you sure as **** dont use integrity in your classification of "men".

For all of you who clearly need a brush up:

in·teg·ri·ty
inˈteɡrədē/
noun
noun: integrity

1.
the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles; moral uprightness.
"he is known to be a man of integrity"
synonyms: honesty, probity, rectitude, honor, good character, principle(s), ethics, morals, righteousness, morality, virtue, decency, fairness, scrupulousness, sincerity, truthfulness, trustworthiness
