I've noticed that the prices of used machine tools seem to be much higher on the west coast than in the Midwest and the East coast. I've always thought this is because their has never been the same level of manufacturing out here as back there. So just less stuff around. What do you folks think?

I think you are absolutely correct. I used to live in Bridgeport, CT and there were machine tools everywhere. Yard sales, flea markets, it seemed like everyone had a collection of some form of machine tools. The further you get away from states and cities that were once heavy into either machine tool maufacturing or small machine shops that supported these industries the fewer machine tools you are going to find.

theres no manufacturing jobs in michigan only way to sell is if you can ship it, smaller stuff like bridgeports and lathes end up scrapped because of shipping costs

How are auctions and CL for mechanics / hand tools up there?

auctions are hit or miss you need to get north of flint for great prices, south of flint i think rickster has the market cornered. Lately alot of the for sale adds have been toolboxes full of tools, but the problem is most toolboxes used in shops are rotted on the bottom from the road salt

Finding used good woodworking tools on the west coast seems hard, at least in my area. I think it's because the west coast is "new" and maybe not as much of that stuff made it out here. I hear about all the deals people get back east and wonder how they do it.

I find it hard to get deals on all kinds of tools on CL around here--well, anything for that matter!
