I bought a few lots from a machine shop auction and got a boat load of these. Anyone have any idea what they are? They seem to be in drill sizes - fractional and number.

The shop had several screw machines so I am guessing they are some type of tooling.

Than you both. That seems to be it.

How are they used exactly? I am guessing they are used in conjunction with a jig specific for the task at hand?

I usually see used them in custom jigs where I needed to drill the same hole over and over.

I would be interested if you are going to part with them. Send me a PM if so.

As mentioned they are for custom jigs (clamping fixture) where you want to eliminate drill wander and don't want to spot drill. Common example is a jig for cross drilling tubing. It's hard to get the drill to start without wandering down the slope of the curve, especially if the hole is off center on the tube. Bushings are used as they are harder than the rest of the jig to prevent the drill from cutting them as well as to be easily replaceable when they do finally wear or need to change sizes.

Slip fixed renewable bushing. They slide into a non-head bushing and are often held in place by a screw. It will slide past the screw head then rotate to lock in place. Easy to replace when worn.

My life is kinda centered around these things. I designed drill fixtures (for our customers) that are used to drill two holes in turbine blades. The holes are used for precisely locating and clamping the blade for the subsequent machining operations.
A new company we started now actually does the drilling operation for the customer.
