Machining Videos

I have been watching a lot of machining videos over the last few weeks and for some reason I can only watch 15 to 20 minutes at a time, I start to feel my eyes getting heavy, and a sense of complete calm overwhelm me.

I think all the spinning and the soothing sounds of the equipment running are hypnotizing me.

Maybe I should have posted this in the conspericy thread.

But seriously am I the only one or do ya'll get the same effect?

I feel ya. Sometimes I can watch for longer, most times I nod off after 15 minutes. I love watching Tubalcain's videos even though he puts me to sleep.

The actual act of machining should be rather boring. If it's exciting, something is about to go wrong. :)

They are a lot of info to assimilate.
You really need to practice the steps after each video.

I would love to get in the shop and practice but I haven't found a lathe or mill yet. Or I should say I have not found a lathe or mill in good working order in the price range I want to be in.

Comes down to want and need, I want the machine tools but I don't need them so the search continues....

If you like milling, then try turning.

Nothing more hypnotic than a spinning lathe.

I love running one. It's like meditation.

But milling is great too.

And don't get e started on grinding....Oh the surface!

I am also a secret polisher. Any metal gets my treatments. It all started in CAP, when we had to polish our brass belt buckles.

Is that weird?

YA for sure same feeling but that being said KEITH FENNER is still a cool dude.

Hes the one I'm watching now. I love when just his chin braid in in the shot and hes talking.
If you haven't check out Keith Rucker, machine tools, rebuilding old wood working machines, steam powered boilers and trains.

Most of the guys who make machining videos have such monotone voices that yeah, the chin hits the table from time to time. :p If you haven't already, check out Tom's Techniques as well. I love his videos, just wish he had more of them. There's also "That Lazy Machinist"

Knowing that either the mill or lathe can rip your arm off in a split second if you do the wrong thing helps keep me alert and focused. The lathe scares the **** out of me, especially working close to the chuck, so I try to maintain a healthy respect for these tools. I do notice that some of the very experienced machinists on youtube are very casual around the lathe when using emery paper and files but I don't try to copy those technics.
