Machinist Vise Slide finishing

Hi all,

When restoring a Machinist Vise, what finish should be used on the slide?

Assume that the slide has been cleaned to bare metal.

1. I assume no paint since the slide is machined to tolerances that paint would foul.

2. If not paint, then how to prevent rust?

Oil it up with a good way oil.

A machined surface is usually left unpainted. Coat it occaisionally with whatever oil you're using to lube the machine and keep it wiped clean.
