Machinist’s tools

Hi, I’m trying to determine the value for these old machinist’s tools and the best place to try to sell them. Any thoughts or suggestions welcome. Thanks for your help.

Welcome aboard! The Starrett and Brown and Sharpe tools are of very good quality. Dated, but still VG. Not sure about the other brand(s), but that the original owner went with Starrett and B & Sharpe probably means that the other stuff is pretty good as well.

Unfortunately, I don't think these types of things draw the $$ like they used to, unless you find the right person. I;ve seen many nice micrometers linger in CL listings, or at my favorite flea. Back in the 80s & 90s, you had lots $$ there. Nowadays, the mikes might get $100 between them. You might poke your nose into https://www.practicalmachinist.com/ or bbs.homeshopmachinist.net/ websites, see how their classifieds look (do they have one?)

Alternatively I can always keep them if their value is low or similarly the interest in them. Any idea where to get a handle for these? I would have expected a set like these to include one but apparently not. That said I’m completely unfamiliar with such scrapers.

Yeah for sure if you may use them or just like them.

The scrapers are for babbitt bearings I'm fairly sure .. unless you are into really old machinery they will be of no use to you unless you find them handy for something else. Getting handles is like for a file etc.. whatever you can find/like.

I had one of those Mounds babbitt scraper sets and it took forever to sell on Ebay for a price that was hardly worth the shipping hassle. An incomplete no name tap and die set might bring $10 at a garage sale. Those big micrometers might attract some interest but there's limited use for them. Serious machinists would want a complete set traceable to NIST so that leaves hobbyists and they want cheap.

Guess it is now niche product and any guy dealing with babbitt probably has 10 sets.

Kijiji would be my suggestion. Never heard of Hoppe, but found another, sold (no price).

I bought a similar Butterfield set at a garage sale...$20.

No idea on the scrapers, those mikes might bring $20-30 ea. Not a lot of interest in those these days, the market is flooded with them.

Those scrappers might be for truing up ways on a lathe or mill. It was how it was done in the old days. Now they run a grinder over the ways. Really a lost art. I believe there are people that still do it, but in this throw away society most people will scrap the machine and buy a new one for what you would have to pay to true up ways on a lathe or mill.

I'm surprised....5 years ago or so I used to sell those on eBay and get a pretty penny (don't remember how much, I'd have to look through my emails), but I would definitely grab them at estate sales/swap meets when I saw them....haven't done much buying/selling for a few years now though.

The tools are in excellent shape for their age. The box is still holding up well other than one “rail” being broken off on one side. Lid still opens and closes as it should, it isn’t falling apart.

If I were to hazard a guess. I would think the same as you mentioned. He used to be more filled out and now he is little more than a skeleton. Some of his videos are abrupt with references to other videos. I have been one of his subscribers for many years. He is two years older than I. This aging is a lousy reward for a life well wasted.

Nobody lives forever, but on the other hand Mr Pete has an awful lot of machinest's tools, lots of duplicates, he could just be getting some of the hoard gone for good money.
Made a lot of great videos over the years.
