Macsimizer Tool Box

Folks, I recently bought a Mac Tools Macsimizer top and bottom tool box. They are model MB1300 and MB1310. It has had a fairly rough life and since I have to remove all the drawers to clean and lube all the slides anyway, I was toying with the idea of doing dent removal and repainting all of it.

A few questions.....
1. Will I add or subtract value to the box by doing this? What paint is recommended? The factory paint number or any good automotive paint?
2. Where can I get parts? It is missing the lock cylinder on the bottom box (hopefully nothing else, but I have not yet looked) and the nameplates and badges look like something was splashed on them and messed them up. If I have it all fixed up, I sure would like for those to be replaced as well.

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks

I worked with a guy who had an old matco box that was repainted in a dark red with pinstriping on it etc...
I noticed a lot of paint chips. I think If you try this, you need to have it done by a powdercoater
(isnt that how they paint them in the first place?)

regular automotive paint will be prone to chipping and scratching

Welcome to GJ. Let's SEE that set of Mac toolboxes !! Edit your first post to add pictures. Go Advanced, then Manage Attachments, and link pictures from your harddrive. Then Upload and finally Save.

Now would be good time to Update GJ Profile with City/State/Country.

Much tougher to get Mac tool box parts in rural China !! :D

If you improve the condition of the box, of course you will increase its value. HOWEVER you have to weigh if it is worth your time and if the time/effort/materials invested is worth the potential value increase. Typically redoing a box is for someone that wants to keep it long term. Properly redoing a box is like painting restoring a car. The used market for boxes, especially common boxes is very competitive. There is alot of surface area to cover on a box and flat panels do not hide mistakes well.

If you bought the box dirt cheap and are improving it then its worth it. But dont expect to make money off it. Hope your going to keep it.

I would see about having someone powdercoat it rather than just doing a regular paint

I am definitely going to keep it. I only paid $1300 for it, so I have some wiggle room. I would have a hard time justifying 10k on a box, but a couple grand? I can justify that ;-)

properly prepping a tool box for repaint is a big job.

trying to "restore" a box to resell is gonna take a lot of time & effort.

personally i wouldnt do anything except clean and lube the slides if needed.

i've done a couple of repaints for myself.

it's ultimately up to you how much time you want to invest.

a call or email to mac may (or may not) get you the missing/damaged parts you need

just keep in mind if you ever want to sell it that the next buyer may want it to match over boxes from the same manufacturer. So repaint could reduce its resale value.

Depends on what your intentions are. Honest feedback to your question depends on your plans.

-If you plan on keeping & using the box, I see no downside to refinishing it. Take your time, Prep & Finish it RIGHT and then enjoy whatever color combo you decide to go with.

-If this was a flip buy for you...I'd just take it all apart, wash it down good, replace any busted slides or parts so its mechanically 100% and then sell it.

As for Paint vs Powder...a good automotive paint would be more then fine...personally I used PPG Shopline Acrylic Urethane when shooting the SnapOn black on my work table build. I would never dream of using spraycans or any other enamel on it.

Good point, but realistically...Around here anyways...I think that those chances are slim to none. Its virtually impossible to find accessories for ANY box in the correct color after the fact. I've been looking for a hutch for my 722 for a while...seen a Blue one, seen a red one...but never a black one...

of course, if I had a Red box, I'm sure I could find 15 Black ones then...LOL

Not to mention, don't often see Accessories go for sale separately...ususally when a box setup is married by the dealer, chances are it stays that way till its death...

Id rather have an old beat up box that functions like it should rather than one that's been painted. Slides are good and the drawers close right, id rock it

I have an old MB-1300 Macsimizer and I am refurbishing it and I was able to buy a new Lockset from Mac Tools and they also warrantied all the Drawer Slides as well as the Caster Assemblies, way to go MAC Tools.
