Hello folks,

I'm planning on adding some electrical outlets in the garage so I decided to make a hole in one of the walls (interior wall, attached to the house) and found this:

should of have rotated the picture, sorry

I remember hearing that the black area in the insulation is caused by a wind draft? Is this bad?

The walls is-> Gyprock, Pink insulation, paper barrier and gyprock ( interior wall)

Thanks

How old is the house? If it was 30 years old I would say that it's not that bad. New construction different story.
Air is moving and dust is traveling along with it. Can you trace it to the nearest air source?

screw some 1x4 backing around the hole and put the piece of drywall back in.

Next time use a level and cut the hole square.

Really the whole wall needs a vapor barrier (on the other side toward the house) and the sill and header plates ought to be sealed as well. It is a big job and probably not worth it. Especially if you haven't noticed any drafts inside the house.

The vapor barrier is there. I just checked all four walls, 3 out of the four have vapor barrier on the interior. It is just the wall in the picture that does not have one facing the "ext" gyprock, it's probably because it's an interior wall.

Also I realized where the wind draft is coming from, not big deal. When the house was originally built the basement was not finished, a bathroom was added and whoever built it left an opening in the ceiling. Well that opening is where the draft is coming from.

I guess it's kinda hard to explain on a forum!

Thanks again!

hmm, wouldn't the hole make a great chimney for a fire?
