Hello guys,

i hope that you can help me out.
Which brand of hand tools are nowadays 'Made in Britain' / COO UK?
I am looking for spanners and ratchets/breaker bars.

A friend of mine is currently studying in England an I asked him if he could bring some tools back home.

Kind regards.

King **** are still made in Birmingham. Good spanners too. Ratchets are good but look industrial. I think Durite electrical tools are UK made too but can't be sure?

Yes, it;s always a good idea to try and find tools when you are abroad! Much cheaper, and you can often find good stuff you've never heard about!

Although everybody here moans about a lot of stuff being made abroad (with just cause, it's usually China, and usually rubbish unfit for the purpose) you can still find just about any tool British made.

Sadly, British firms are dreadful at advertising and marketing, so the tools can take some tracking down. It's worth the trouble though, because you can get really good quality stuff at prices little higher than the imported!

I'd advise the following. All these firms offer good quality and very reasonable prices :-

Eclipse / Spear and Jackson - Nice U.K. made screwdrivers. I really like the blue triangular handles, but red hard handles are also available.

Elliott Lucas - Good quality British made pliers and cutters. They make a huge range, but I prefer the plain metal handles which are most durable in the workshop.

Maun - Currently the only maker of "Bernards pattern" compound action pliers and cutters. Once you've used them you always will!

Thorex - Awesome selection of hammers. Plastic faces, nylon, hide, copper, it's all there in just about any handle style or size. about half the price of anything imported too!

Eclipse and Priory - both firms make a good range of punches. The Eclipse are slightly tougher in my opinion but both are good. The priory roll pin punches are really useful.

King **** - The last mainstream British manufacturer of wrenches and socket wrenches. Good stuff. Good and tough, and reasonably well finished. Sadly , this is one area where the U.K. has been hit hard, and a lot of historical firms have been bought out then had production outsourced!

There's loads of other stuff out there, and almost any specialist tool from simple cutting tools through to obscure exotica can be sourced, but avoid the high street where high rents force shopkeepers to charge top dollar for shite, and seek out old style ironmongers or specialists!

The pictures show Elliott Lucas pliers, Thorex hammers, Maun pliers (and an Eclipse Pozidriv) Eclipse and Priory punches (with a Footprint hammer to belt 'em with) and King **** Wrenches!

Good shopping!

Warwick Industrial Supplies - Ladbroke Pk, Millers Road, Warwick. 01926 497350.

Don't be put off by the name, they are only about 6 or 8 miles from Coventry. They have recently moved, and I havn't visited the new shop, but the old one was well stocked! I would, however, ORDER IN ADVANCE! Give em a ring (ask for Mike) and they will be able to order any of these tools! Good prices too!

They are also the U.K. Importers of PB Swiss, and they usually have a good stock of that! Bear in mind that you will pay U.K. tax, but you are entitled to CLAIM IT BACK at the airport!

Bear in mind also, that MSC are really big in the U.K. now! You can order anything not in the catalogue by talking to their "tech team", and their prices on u.k. made stuff are really keen! Give 'em an extra couple days for non catalogue items and have the order shipped to your hotel!

Dave; Just a note to say I have a pair of Maun side cutters, had them for ages and they are my favourite pair, however I never knew the brand of them (obtained from my dad, who worked for BT, so they have BT on the jaws) so thank you so much for putting that list up, now I know I can get hold of another pair :D

Thanks to every one on the post for boosting the reputation of British brands. Its a shame there is so much out sourcing done by company's now days. I have a lot of my dads old tools in the Garage all types of brands mentioned on here.
I also have a old 6 inch Vice made by Record and a few other tools by the same brand really good and solid tools if you can find the old stuff.
Im not sure where the modern stuff is made now tho I don't think it is made over here any more. i have my Vice pictures on my Garage Thread calld. Little British Garage

Wow guys,

thanks for the replies!

And if I want to buy second-hand, what are the names of the companies which made their tools in England (and are maybe/sadly out of business)?

Kind regards

Britool/Sykes-Pickavant were my favorites but you need to look for older stuff if you want British made items as they both import stuff nowadays.

Glad to help!

Maun make quite a lot of stuff with other names on, but beware! I bought a pair of cutters from a fleabay seller which he said were 'same as Maun'. They weren't! They were no doubt made by Maun, but 'down to a price' for an industrial customer, and were nowhere near as well finished as the tools with their own name on!

They make some other good stuff too - I have their washer punch with interchangeable heads (enables you to make your own fibre and rubber washers) and it's got me out of trouble loads of times!

Mr MoAiZo; And if I want to buy second-hand said:
Well, to quote Daniel Craig "that's a very expansive question"!

Assuming we are talking engineers tools here, and not woodwork tools, machine tools or cutting tools, I would keep a look out for the following :-

Screwdrivers - Stanley, Gordon (my favourites) and Footprint.

Pliers - Record, Wilkinsons and Trident.

Hammers - Clydesdale Whitehouse and Footprint.

Spanners, Socket Spanners and accessories - Britool, Bedford and Gordon.

Files - Stubs.

Allen Keys - Unbrako.

Vices - Record and Paramo.

Small tools (punches, tap wrenches etc) and of course inspection equipment - Moore and Wright.

That's by no means a complete list - no doubt others will add to it! There is also a recentish thread about British Made Tools with some info and some pictures!

Be wary though, with some of these firms the quality got much worse before they disappeared, and some, such as Record and Stanley are still going but producing tools made abroad and of very poor quality. Unscrupulous dealers often try to pass off the poor quality tools as the decent ones!

Buy with your eyes open, and if in doubt check it says 'Made in England'.

And yes, I do enjoy my Maun pliers :).

Those are called 'Gas Pliers' and have been made, virtually unchanged, for 70 years to my certain knowledge!

They were originally designed for gas fitters, but are a surprisingly useful pattern! I use mine for freeing stubborn hoses, either on vehicles, or machine cooling systems! I use 'em so much I have a second pair in my 'road box'

My Dad had a pair that are seriously old, I have a pair dating from the 90's and a more recent pair! None of them seem to have any country of origin marks, but all appear to be made from similar forgings, so I would suspect they are still made in the U.K.

Stupid not putting it on there, but then it's stupid not to offer their classic dip coated handles any more, it's stupid not to offer chrome plated models, it's stupid to be constantly cheapening the product, and it's stupid to be attempting to distribute your products through a network of shops that havn't existed for a decade! But they do it just the same!

Good pliers though!

And, while you are there, plan on a visit to Warwick castle. Well worth the visit.
