I was referred here by a member of 6speedonline.com "Montecristo", and I have been browsing around. Some killer garage ideas here. I am currently building a garage of my own, and figured I would share. Hope it turns out to be as nice as some of the masterpieces I have seen here.

anyways...had to move the old little shop out of the way...I have been working in here for about 10 years or so and this garage has seen A LOT of cars...and lots of work....

It has been a helluva mess with the city....long story short. I was given permits to build...I built....then they tell me its to tall cut it down, so I went about it a little differently and just removed 4 feet from the back connected it to the existing house and "cheated" the zoning laws....

so first they build in a new wall in order to hold the "load" so the old one could be torn down....
downstairs

upstairs

and just to see how much is coming off...
IMG_3034.jpg

then just tear down whats on the outside of that wall....roof and all....

IMG_3073.jpg

leaving me with a sh*tload of wasted lumber, and a pocket short of about 20,000 dollars on top of what is already spent and I still need to finish up the siding, boxing, and the inside....

then moved on to the front....

That's nice of the township telling you about the height problem AFTER you built it. Good luck though on completing the garage.

You doing a lot of the work yourself or are you having it built?

That's going to be one Hell of a workspace when it's all done. How tall is it anyway? How does cutting back 4 feet get you around the height issue? Was their beef with the overall square footage footprint so you brought it down by removing the 4 feet? That really ***** in any case seeing how far you were into the project!

Madspeed - I couldn't believe the township could screw you like that especially AFTER they issued the permits! Well you deserve a medal for perseverance in doing what you had to do. I would have probably wound up in jail for my response to their idiocy. I hope you are able enjoy working in your new garage once it is completed.

Anybody - Is this even legal? Am I missing something here?

Seems a lawyer should be consulted if it hasn't been done. Looking good. What's the plan for the 2nd floor?

I have talked with a lawyer about the situation and it is believed that the total cost to sue would be greater than the cost to simply "conform". Do I believe I was wronged...hell yes. But for the sake of my sanity and wallet, I have to choose to simply build. I am not willing to put myself at risk of not winning the case, having spent all of the money to fight it, and in turn still have to re-build.

I dont agree with what has been done, and I was pushed around a bit by the city zoning department, but I have to move forward.

And as for the second floor..it will remain storage until I can get through a final inspection...I am just about out of funds to complete the upstairs due to the changes to the building. One day I would like to finish it off as another room for the house.

dude , i agree i too had a hell of an issue with my local town heres the story... i have a 106x328 property with a small house on it, i talked to the zoning officer and he said i could build the 30x80 i wanted no problem ok i filed for the permits and the construction official who had no authority to say no ... said no. well they squashed my build i looked on line and found out he had no say brought it in front of the board they still said no. i met all the requirements to build my garage no special variances needed. so i got a lawyer.. well long story short $17,500 in lawyers fees and a year of stress getting harressed by zoning about my other propertys for stupid **** property maintance ect bull sh*t. after it going all the way to the supreme court the judge said it was a silly case . bounced it back to land use board in 10 miuntes they approved my build on the fact that the zoning officer said yes and the construction officer had no authority. in the mean time they real quick made the construction officer a zoning officer so we now have 2.. to cover there *** and gave this man a $10,000 a yr raise for his new title(im not kidding true) my lawyer basically made there building plan bullet proof so they rewrote the building ordiance.im still getting harressed but they kind of fear me because they know ill go the distance. in the long run my building is built... the a hole was the guy who inspected it so i had to deal with him. i would say dont sue its not worth it if you found a loop hole go that route instead. im still building the garage i posted here, its my dream garage but the hit my wallet took suing these clowns sucked. good luck sorry to ramble but had to share my story,m.

Exactly what I thought! Plus the engine looks WAY too big to fit in that little car! Just like a hot rod should!:pimpflash

My girl's eye caught this while I was looking at it, and she went on to say... why is the garage nicer/bigger than the house!?!?! I responded with, thats the way it should be!!! :shocking:

Great work by the way, and sorry to hear the city jock you around like that. I deal a lot with the city here, and sometimes they are completely unreasonable. Some guys are alright, but you run into that one inspector that’s on a power trip all the time... Sort of annoying but they're everywhere.

I always reply with; "cars are bigger than people so of course the need a bigger place to live"

Nice build. I'm looking forward to having the funds to add on to my shop but I have to admit that I'm really not looking forward to all the paperwork/permit stuff.

You don't have lawyers in your area that don't require payment unless you win? They don't take on cases they don't think can be won, and if they do think it can be won in your favor, they build one hell of a case.

You think the township is going to want to put a bunch of money up for fighting this?

So as it turns out.....I did hire a lawyer...and there is a formal letter being drafted to put the city on notice that they are going to be sued....just have to see what happens from here really.
