I am looking to get a Fein - https://www.qualitytoolsonline.ca/c...ll-with-variable-speed-and-reverse-jmu-137-qw it has the features I am looking for.

If anyone has feedback on this model or Fein in general, please fell free to comment

For tapping, most taps I see and the many I have are square shank, usually made for hand tapping kits. I saw this Weldon adapter - https://www.qualitytoolsonline.ca/collections/mag-drill-accessories/products/69908038506 but it has a hex shank, presumably for the HMT Versadrive taps which have the hex shank.

My questions concerning tapping are;
1) These "hand" tapping kits, can they be used in a Mag Drill, or they are not strong enough for the stress from the Mad Drill?
2) Anyone know of an adapter that goes from Weldon to the square shank on most taps?

Thanks

Fein mag drills are the BEST. We use them all the time in the air drilling beams. While Milwaukee is big and great its also very heavy. The Fein drills are a lighter, compact, and very durable. Replacement parts are easy to get. Personally I would never buy another brand of mag drill.

There are multiple ways to drive taps and other common accessories on a mag drill.

For a weldon spindle machine, which is what you are looking at, they offer a slew of 3/4" weldon adapters. The problem you can run into is travel length and retract height on certain machine.

Weldon shank taps are about the shortest length you will get, but you are then stuck buying mag drill specific taps.

A number of companies make rigid tapping adapters for weldon shanks. They also make floating as well as true tapping heads (more for mag drills that don't reverse).

You can put a weldon to drill chuck adapter into a mag drill then drive the tap by the round with a standard drill chuck. You will be limited to ~1/4-3/8" due to a non positive drive.

A number of companies also make tap drivers for the weldon shank that are size specific. IE you would have a 3/4" weldon to say M12 adapter that has a female square so you can drive common, square end taps.

Good info on the taps, thanks

We just got a new Jancy at work. I believe Fein bought out Jancy, renamed them Fein, but now are calling them Jancy again. Regardless, our new one says Jancy.

That said, I would not purchase another. There is a computer something or other, detecting the thickness of the material for magnetic strength. Our equipment comes with a heavy coat of paint, which needs to be removed in order for the drill motor to run.

I personally use a USA made Hougen HMD904 and wouldn't purchase anything other than Hougen. Mine is a few years old and still has the mechanical magnet detector/shut off.

I know on my Fein (which is a 2 1/2" machine if using carbide tipped cutters) you can drift out the Weldon chuck and use the morse taper directly, which really opens up the tooling you can use on it.
