Mag Drill Stand

I picked up a used mag drill a few months ago for a future project, and had the plan in mind to build a stand for it to get max use out of it. It is bitchin cool just by itself though. There just aren't a ton of these out there, so I pulled ideas from 3 places.

I used to have a CNC plasma and on this project, I was missing it! I drew up the most of the parts I wanted and had them laser cut at a shop across the river. It worked out well though I must admit.

Pics laser cut parts, spacer and tabs cut from scrap on my femi and in an inception maneuver- using the mag drill to drill most of a circle of 5/8" holes that will accept my strong hand style tooling.

Welding up the spacer and locator tabs first. The base and then final. I did sneak in a second inception- using the tooling holes to hold it self together for weld up.

And a splash of hammered black on the base while it was still warm. Still on the hunt for the rubber feet I want.

All done.

Sweet Milwaukee mag drill. Question for you, are annular bits able to be resharpened. We go through a ton of 3/4 cyclones at work it seems like such a waste to toss em when they stop cutting

I made a table for my mag base with a drop piece of 3/4" plate about 12" x 24". Why 3/4? Because it was about the right size and laying there. I drilled a 1" hole in the middle of the far end and started using it. I like the idea of the chocks to position the drill in the same spot every time. I set mine in the ideal location and then traced it with a sharpie. I put little thought into mine and even less time. Yours looks much nicer.

Why the step down to the drill table?

That thing is awesome  Looks really professional for sure

Thank you. I've really tried to step up my game over the last 5 years.

Yeah generally I believe by the same people that do endmills. I am not a heavy user, so no need.

Why the step down to the drill table?

So you can pass a part (plate mainly) under the drill, in the case that the plate is either a) larger than the centerline radius of your base to cutter or b) non ferrous. OR both a and b. The height should be set that your 2" DOC cutter just passes below the top of the work table.

Makes good sense. I haven't ran into that need yet. I will tuck that knowledge away for later. Either I will run into a project I need that capability or I'll have some time to kill and modify mine. Thanks for posting your project.

Naw, Strasburg, PA. I did check McMaster. Not quite what I wanted. Found 2 full sets on Amazon I will try for less than 1 fancy foot from McMaster. Probably come in the mail after Christmas if not Saturday.

Wow, yours is way nicer than the one I built a few years ago. Great job. I may need to redesign mine.

Thanks. Yours in the same idea, different execution. Of the 3 styles I pulled ideas from, this one is built like a guy in the UK. One of the inspirations was by that guy on YouTube, Ramsey IIRC. He struggled with overhang and flex breaking his annular cutters. So I tried to be rigid on both tiers.

That thing looks well built and you could probably sell them. It might be low volume though.

Thanks and no thanks on the sale! Haha. 98% of people ( non business )don't want to pay for squat, and businesses were even worse. I learned that in my CNC plasma/fab business I sold out this time last year.

Yup, much nicer than mine too, I made one out of angle iron to use in a receiver hitch vise, I want to make one a bit nicer, but the angle iron was fairly easy to setup. I think that having the locating plates is the best solution, mine had to be tweaked every time I set it up. The issue was I needed to drill a bunch of aluminum and small steel that there was no way to use the mag drill on.

Considering you have no intent to sell these, do you mind sharing the CAD files? The more I look at this thing, the more I NEED one.
