How do you guys store your magazines? Since I started getting them a little over 10 years ago, I've accumulated probably 600-700. Great having them as a resource, but it ***** when you need to dig out a 2003 Car Craft with 100 magazines on top of it. Even more fun when you want to put it back in its place. I've just been stacking them in a closet, but it's finally gotten to the point where it's more trouble than it's worth to look for anything.

I know there are those vertical boxes (which can add up in a hurry), and I'll probably end up just building a bookcase when I have the room, but I'm just curious how you guys store your periodicals?

You can get the plastic shelf boxes (magazine files) for magazines for only a few$ apiece, or less than a buck each for cardboard ones. If you are going to keep years and years of magazines, what is the point, unless you can easily access the volume/edition you want?

Oh, and I don't keep old magazines. It is too much of a hassle.

Cardboard magazine files
Label the end with title and year/month range
As they get older I put the whole thing in boxes that come from kinkos (they fit perfect) and then label the box and store them

I have a Large 36" wide, 4 drawer High metal File Cabinet from an Office Building in my Garage that is Full of My Magazines.
It has to weigh a Ton.
Bottom drawer is 50-60's
Next up is 70's-80's
and so on.

I've bought most of my hard magazine holders (as opposed to the cardboard kind) at garage sales.

The paper ones break down faster, so plan on getting the hard ones.

A bit off topic but if you have any to discard and have a VA Medical Ctr near by think about dropping them off as a donation.i know the one near me is always in need of reading material.

I rip out the articles that are keepers and file them in a 4 drawer, then toss the rest of the mag. Anything "keepsake" type goes in the 4 drawer. Not many of those. Mostly I read and toss after about 6 months. I get about 8 every month.

if you have a "doller shop" or any of the other stores that sell everything for a doller, they sell plastic ones for a buck.

since the Internet was invented, there really is no real good reason, IMHO, to save magazines anymore. Donate them...if anyone will take them.

I've started to scan keeper articles and save on the computer hard-drive and USB thumbdrive. I find it easier to search/locate the specific article and keep paper magazines as a converstation piece in the bookshelves.

Respectfully disagree. I'm pretty computer savvy, but to me it's still handier having a hard copy rather than having to search for it online. If it's just one article, sure it's easier to look for it on here, but some websites are bad for not having stuff posted or deleting old articles. Biggest reason, though, is I'll be opening a shop some day and it's much easier to keep them to look through for inspiration than just randomly search for car pics online - often without pertinent information.

That, and I just get sick of staring at a computer screen.

This is why I keep my magazines as well. I keep mine on an old tv stand that I use as a bookshelf, some are stored away in box until I can make or get a bigger book shelf.

I cut the articles out I want to keep and place them in clear plastic sleeves and a three ring binder. My next step is to organise them by subject. I am considering the scan and store electronically though.

Find a big old file cabinet at a thrift store. Sometimes they still have hanging file folders in them, if not, go buy a whole bunch. Cut the folder in half where it bends, that leaves you with two separate hanger rods...suspend your magazines from the rods (each hanger rod will hold one magazine).

Makes it very easy to sort and find what you're looking for, especially the glued spine magazines like Hot Rod.

I like the dollar store idea for getting the plastic storage. Never even considered that.

Ive been tossing out a ton (almost literally lol) of my old car mags. I'm keeping 1975 and older for now. I'm sure I have at least 2000 left. All sorts of car type mags going back to the 40's. Dunno if I can ever get rid of the rest.

I find that ten 20-round FAL magazines fit perfectly in a .30-cal ammo can - oh, you mean paper magazines. Back when we used to print hundreds of reams of paper every month after month-end close, I'd take some of those empty paper boxes home and use them for magazine storage. Nowadays I don't buy many magazines, and most of the ones I do wind up with get tossed.

I am with you brother. I have a 4 and 5 drawer file cabinet that I use. 1 drawer holds 12 magazine per year and about 10 years in it. The mags i collect go back into the 50s and I have others from 1918 on.

Forgot I was supposed to post a pic... You can use the large for bound spine and medium for stapled spine. I got 2 holders from each box.

Magazines are quite precious, often not only for their articles but also for the advertisements, the columns, the style, and all the other things that represent a period. but they are hard to store!

I use file folders in filing cabinets to keep the magazines vertical, with spines on top to allow easy reading. I think I will keep only 1970s magazines and older, but know there are current magazines, such as Octane, that relate to those years. I will have to keep those too.

It is a problem.
