Magnetic Impact Nutsetter

Hello all. I was doing some research and was trying to find a good magnetic impact nut setter with a 1/4” shank for my M12 impact driver. Was curious if anyone had any recommendations. Metric and SAE would be nice but I really only need SAE most likely. I was thinking for odd jobs where I help my parents fix appliances, or remove a bunch of bolts from a storm door to replace a screen, things like that. I have impact sockets at 3/8” and 1/2” for car stuff but nothing on the smaller end. Some options I was considering are:

Currently leaning on this. Cheap and portable, though limited in sizes. Two piece design will probably make for a less tight fight and introduce some wobble plus risk it falling off the stem, but Being able to clean the magnet easily is nice too I suppose. I won’t be driving a lot of self tapping screws with it though so it shouldn’t attract tons of metal shavings though so maybe this is not the right option.

There is also a 4pc snap on version that honestly competitively prices compared to the other items on the list. Though the blue point and snap ones are both made in china anyways, so there probably is no real difference between these and some other choices on this list.

Pricey and I would probably break up the set to have to leave some in a tool bag. Also, with this approach I need my 1/4” shank to 1/4” drive adapter which adds length and is more stuff to carry. But I don’t have 1/4” impact sockets so maybe this is nice.

Same vain as the other sunex link.

Sometimes I don’t trust Dewalt bits. I didn’t like my Dewalt PH impact bits that much, the price is very cheap which worries me, and I see a fair amount of negative reviews hidden in that sea of positives.

No clue on quality

Nice but pricey. Also, might not be made for impacts???

Also maybe not made for impacts?

So yea. I’m thoroughly confused haha. I don’t plan on buying a 1/4” impact wrench anytime soon so a 1/4” drive socket set maybe overkill, but I could use them on my M12 impact drill with the adapter so it’s an option for car stuff down the line where there’s space. The smaller sets look like less bang for the buck but are more compact when used with the M12 impact drill and I can just move a couple bits into a pouch I keep my bits in and call it a day.

And before anyone recommends a VIM set, it’s really overkill for what I need since I don’t care about the hollow shaft.

Curious what you all use and what you may recommend for me. I’m not limited to these choices either. Just what I found after a lot of searching.

I picked up 2 of these no name sets from TSC for less than $10. I use them to run lag bolts and do light automotive work with my 20v dewalt brushless impact and they're holding up just fine. The magnet is plenty strong as well.

Aw man I was about to recommend the VIM set. I really like mine.

The Malco is a popular choice for contractors. 5/16 and 1/4 are by far the most popular sizes, but I think you'll want a kit with more sizes in it.

I've used a lot of Dewalt nutsetters, and they've been durable for me. Up until everyone became Milwaukee fanboys I think Dewalt nutsetters were the most common ones you'd see on a construction site for putting in Tapcons and the like. I currently use Makita nutsetters most of the time and really like them, but they only sell sets with 3 sizes.

At home I have a set of Nieko nutsetters I use for bench work and sometimes when doing automotive work. They are reasonably good quality and can't beat the price. I like that they come with a holder too, since they're so easy to lose.

You can just get the Milwaukee if u wanna. I wouldn't put too much thought into this to be honest.. or just search Amazon and pick out whatever set you like, for whatever reason you like them.

That m12 really won't have the power to break anything even of moderate quality.

Those look nice.

I've been using the Hercules from HF at work and they've held up well.

My milwaukee 5/16 broke the magnet out. Kind of ***** with no magnet. HF will be strong enough for a m12 gun.

You can also get a quick connect to 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2in square drive that accept sockets and really have all your bases covered. I use 1/4in sockets on my m18 impact quite often.

I have been With Irwins. Use 1/2" x 4" nut setter daily for 2 years. Lowes use to have them. I got them as individuals. No metric though.

Thanks for all the input! Go figure, after looking over all your options, and after looking at a lot of reviews, I just decided, screw it, and go the Metric and SAE VIM set. Buy once, cry once and all that. I'll probably just pull the 1/4", 5/16", 8mm, and 10mm magnetic ones for my to go bag I bring everywhere, and only bring out the full sets when I have a bigger job planned, like my parent's leaky valve cover.

Thanks again!

Ha that's cool, I read your post just itching to recommend the VIM sets. I was glad I read the whole thing before replying. You'll be glad you ended up getting them, and the hollows will come in handy.

Haha thanks! Can’t wait to use them! I just don’t see myself ever buying a 1/4” impact wrench since I have the 1/4” impact driver, so the VIM Set adds a lot of flexibility to a tool I already own. And I have other VIM tools and trust them to make a good product.

Yet again, I appreciate everyone’s input! This is a great place to find actual feedback on products. I simply don’t trust amazon reviews when it comes to tools. Everything is rated 4.8/5 stars on there and that’s simply just not true. Most people don’t know what a good tool is. And even the bad reviews are dumb a lot of the times where it’s a clear case of someone, almost guaranteed, using a tool for an application it’s really not meant for and it failing to perform.

Malco makes the nice little 1/4 5/16 reversible one I keep in my pocket.

I have 4 lengths of those and I love them. I do however wish the 1/4 side was longer in order to use it as a bit holder

Harbor freight have a set that is like 6-8 bucks or even cheaper on sale. Not the best quality but I have them in my extra just incase tool kits I don't use them very much but I have yet to brake on. Also just so you know you can use a bit holder as a 1/4 nut driver. Not the stringest but work in a pinch. Also they do have little 1/4 socket set for like 10 bucks on sale like I have a gear wrench one with a ratcheting wrench sockets and bits
