Can anyone recommend a good magnetic sweep, where the magnet turns off. I am looking for a smaller one to clean up around drill press and welding table. Not the kind that you sweep the floor with. Thanks

Thanks, this confirms my suspicion that there is not one available with an off/on magnet

How big are you looking for? There are plenty of switchable magnets in the welding world for positioning and pickup. Not the cheapest lookup magswitch to give you an idea then find the cheaper options.

I have the HF one and it works. It doesn't have a true "ON/OFF" switch, you just pull the bar up which pulls the magnet away from the bottom the magnet normally sits on which should dislodge most items. I've used it on cuttings after using a metal chop saw and mill scale grindings.

Thanks...these would be great if the had on off magnets....these are good for picking up nails and bigger objects, not so good for chips

There is no way to turn off a permanent magnet. The welding mag clamps work the same way, by moving the magnet away from the surface. Sounds like you are talking about a powered electromagnet. I think a basic sweep covered with a small bag as mentioned earlier would be most practical for this use.

I use bags as well. Sandwich bags on small hand held magnets for the table, and grocery bags for the sweeper.

I also have the HF one, it does very well at picking up tiny, tiny metal particles. I was amazed by what it picked up just going up and down my driveway.

I also have one like the one from Harbor Freight. I think I got it at Lowe's right after tore a shed down in the backyard. And yes, it is unreal what they find and pick up.
