Mailbox Post Cap

Fun little project I did this weekend. Our 6x6 mailbox post top was rotted out.
I laid out a cap on my computer and printed out a pattern.
Traced it onto aluminum sheet and cut it out.
Made a cleat to hold the ends together.
A little OSI poly caulk to seal it up.
Painted white to match.
Not perfect, but good enough. Only took like 20 minutes to make.

I spent part of the weekend making new wooden bases for our copper topped 6” posts.

Here are the templates. The whole template for a 6x6 wouldn't fit on 8.5x11 paper, so I put part of it on a separate sheet. You'll have to scale it to fit your lumber and do a little cutting and taping. A wide and fairly dull putty knife helped start the bends. Lay it on several layers of towels when striking it.

It's the same cedar post since the subdivision was built in 1992 and am told they were post office approved. Due to decades of string trimmer damage, carpenter ants, and rotting at ground level, it is now a breakaway design. If we can get a few more years out of it, we'll be good. The real enemy is inexperienced snow plow drivers. One winter they mowed down dozens in the subdivision.

Jk, nice job. I am looking to copy and then add a pipe to one so I can place a plastic crow on it to see if it will keep away the smaller hawks.
