Well I guess its time to have a place to keep track of what is becoming a pretty decent place to be. Hope I can someday give some folks some sweet ideas like I have been inspired by on here.

For starters I began with an empty shell of 30x50 with no power. I have slowly gotten it wired with it's own 200 amp service. I made the mistake of moving a bunch of junk in and now I get to play tetris anytime I want to do anything.

I am now just beginning to insulate half of the garage and it is going to be a very itchy project. Not to mention I get to move everything 5 or six times.

I split the garage roughly in half and created a double hinged door that is supported by wheels so I could access the heated portion of the garage if need be in the middle of winter.

The shop Tetris can be a pain, but it will be worth it in the end. I had to do the same thing to reconstruct and enlarge my shop. I installed interior plywood walls in a 30” walk way around the perimeter by grouping my equipment in the center of the shop. All is good now.

You get better at it the more you play! As for the itchy project, do you already have all the insulation? If not, look at Roxul, it is a tad bit more money, but way easier to install and no itch, you even get a bit more R value out of it.

I have a radiant tube heater that keeps my 50 x 30 shop nice a warm, highest bill in the last 15 years was $ 110 when it was in the 20s - 30s most of the month

Insulation is no fun but soon enough it will be done. Moving stuff around gives an opportunity to sort and get rid of stuff.

You got that right. I have been finding stuff I forgot I had placed in there.
I have had the 4 Eye since I graduated high school. My Father gave it to me as a gift. He bought it when I was little and we always worked on it together. When we installed the off road H pipe and super turbo mufflers I was hooked. Have been a Mustang guy ever since. I just sold a 91 gt with a 347. This is the first time in a long time I have been without. The vert is going to sit until I get the shop done and can strip it. Needs to be done right.

I currently have a pellet stove hooked up to warm my hands with. I plan on installing a heat pump at some point. Jan-feb here may not get much out of zero. I am only wanting to keep it at about 40-50 degrees and throw on the pellet stove when I want to work out there. I have never heard of the radiant other than the in floor kind. Is this what you are talking about?

I have a bunch of it all ready. That Roxul looks amazing though. Perhaps the other side....

My shop had one plug in, wired below the 200 amp service that the owner had a light plugged into. It was just a shell with bare studs.
I tried to send a picture but it failed.
I have found "for me" the new insulation doesn't make me itch.
My wife and I insulated the shop, put in a white roofing sheet metal celling and down from the celling for the first 6 feet down the walls. 4 gang plugs every 4 feet, 3 rows of LED lights the length of the shop, ran 220 branches that allow me to weld at any location in the shop and we built an office.
What I like most about the heater is the fact that every thing in the shop is heated, cars, cement, everything. When the rollup door is opened and its 20 degs outside you don't feel that woosh of cold air. The heater doesn't run forever once the door is closed since its not try to warm the air. Everything in the shop is warming the air so its turn around is very short. The fact the heater is not drawing any inside allow me to paint in the dead of winter and the exhaust is going outside so no risk of CO2 posion.
I've had mine closed to 15 years and it was on the cheaper side of shop heaters. We did the gas piping, installed the intake, exhaust vents in the roof and installed the heater.

Managed to get a little bit more done on the divider wall. Insulated the upper part of the wall and put some osb on the other side. Installed the pin on the pivot of my two part door.

Should be able to close at least the open eves up this coming week as I have it off and nothing to do. Lets hope for warmish weather!

I am just attaching them directly to this site. Are they not showing for you guys? you have to go to attach files down below where you type in advanced mode. Then all you have to do is select the files you want and hit the upload button and wait until they appear and then close the window.

On another note I am borrowing a drywall lift from my cousin. So I should be able to knock out most of the celling this week! I am so frican excited to be so close to being able to get some heat to stay in there. lol

Still don't know why I don't live in one of the warm spots...

Man that is a nice shop. I think the DIY Mr Cool heat pump will be perfect for what I need in my shop. I really only need to keep it warm so I don't even need to heat a ton, and I will have AC in the summer! .
The pellet stove is a 61k BTU unit and will pull the temp up quick if I will be out there for the day. The stove will take the edge off now when it is 20 or so out and the garage isn't insulated at all.

Thanks, its still a work in progress. I have a lean-to on one side of the shop that I want to enclose for parking completed vehicles and stop storing them in the shop.
I keep my heater at 64 and up to 70 when I paint. Insulation made a major benefit.
All the work on the shop has been done over the last ten years in small projects. The house, the property are also in need of projects as well, I'm sure you know how it goes. This last summer we rebuilt all of our decks and I got very little shop time, next up is the bathroom and then the kitchen. I have spent almost every day in the shop for the last 2 months working on my truck, all this is due to having a heated shop.
You will be very happy once your in the shop working and its comfortable.

Not much progress on the garage lately I have been busy enjoying the summer. I have made a change to the change with the ceiling. A company close to me sells pallets of cut osb. For $50 I grabbed a pallet of 200 17"X48x3/4 osb that I plan on doing my ceiling with. I know this sounds like a pain and I'm sure my calfs will hate me but this way I can manage to piece it together by myself.

I have managed to get a couple pieces of plastic up on the rafters. This has been slightly more difficult than I had anticipated but I'm getting there. I have some time off this fall and plan to spend a week working on getting the space closed in.

I have been productive selling off some junk I have sitting around taking up space so that has helped out some with the tetris game.

Well managed to get a little bit done with the ceiling and the door. It is starting to hold some heat now and just in time! Tonight was 25 degrees outside and snowing, inside it was 62 and climbing when I called it. Feeling a bit motivated to get the insulation up on the walls!

Looking great! Nothing quite like wood heat! Your 30x50 looks perfect to me. (I am 24x30, and wish for twice the room, so yours should be perfect!) I went with the FG between the studs. The R value approximates the studs, so about right. Then I went with some reclaimed iso on top of the FG later on. (Why play one round of Tetris when you can do it twice?) Also did FG and ISO on the ceiling, but only did that in one round. Must be getting lazy in my old age?

I need to finish insulating the garage at the house. I don't need to keep it heated constantly but to be able to warm it up for a project or so that when it is 10 degrees out the garage is still in the low 30's is good enough for my everyday use!

Definitely finish the insulation and sheet the walls. Makes it so much more enjoyable to work out there with a fire going and cold beers. Keep all you tools as to the point you move nothing to use something is my philosophy!

I cant wait to just have it closed up so I can get to work on the workbench. I have so much stuff laying around and I refuse to put the car outside. It is getting close though a couple more days off and I should have the last wall wired for power. Then I can insulate and close it up.

Don't know how much you guys got. With a little ice thrown in, and enough snow to cover the hay, I got out to ski a little yesterday.

We got enough to get me motivated to get the cab and snowblower on the tractor. 1-3 inches something like that with a melt and ice thrown in for good measure. Fall storms make such a damn mess.

I managed to get a little bit of the strapping done this morning when I got home from work. I was pleased to see how fast the stove took the edge off in the room though it was pretty warm at 35. I have priced out the insulation for the ceiling and man they are proud of that stuff lol. I am hoping to get that bought as soon as I can save some $. I feel that will make working out there a whole lot nicer as most of my heat loss is the ceiling with just plastic on it. I might even get the strapping done this weekend who knows.

That’s motivational I guess...I remember stoking the stove in the garage as a kid to work on stuff in the winter growing up in New Brunswick.
I went out today and finally turned on the heat in the shop to the minisplit...68 degrees should keep it nice

That's where I am hoping to be with this in a couple of years. I plan on putting in a new cool DIY minisplit to keep it heated all the time to 50 or so. I really can't wait to have a space to actually work on things.

I didn't get to finish the strapping but I did get a bunch more done. Hopefully tommorow I will be resetting to night shift and can put in some good work and finish it up!

Got to do some work in the Boring garage today. Woke up to about 4 inches of the white stuff that was heavy and wet. It was a surprise it was supposed to be rain. This was my second warning that it was time to put the blower on so I decided it was time to heed the warnings lol. Ate turkey first then while everyone was napping I made it out to make it happen.

I have two days next week to work on finishing the strapping and I might even put up some osb. I really wanted to put up metal but its just not in the budget for me. Excited to be making progress.

Got some time to work in the garage tonight. I have 95 percent of the strapping done and will be starting the OSB tommorow night!!! Getting amped up to get the insulation done and then work on closing the walls!

Well today the ceiling was insulated! Lots of work and clean up but worth every minute. Here's to a warm space!

Awesome, it makes such a difference. I just went from a no ceiling to fully insulated garage myself and it's been worth every dollar spent. Enjoy.
