I have been lurking for about 12 months as a member and as long back as 2004 as a guest while building our garage. Gathered lots of ideas, used some, developed others, finally decided to start posting. I hate typing, so you guys will probably see more pics than words. I will start early in the build and add more as I come across them, I started the build in july 04. I didnt have the digital camera handy when the slab was poured so the pics start with framing the walls. maybe will scan the slab pics in when I can find the 4x6 prints.

Some brief specs....
24 x 40 x 10, walls 2 x 6 old straight lumber salvaged, 6:12 pitch truss roof,

wife and I did everything except the slab and electric. the trusses were pre fab but we flipped them up just the 2 of us, some days trying to convince her we werent crazy was hard. it definitely brought a close marriage closer. anyway enjoy the pics.......

Martin.

Nice work! I'll bet that was a bit challenging for just the 2 of you. Using old lumber in the walls probably made them stronger (but heavier). Sounds funny, but they don't grow trees like they used to. Some of that old stuff is so hard you can hardly drive a nail in it without drilling a pilot hole!

Some of the lumber was hard, but I was surprised how good most of it was, protected flooring and wall areas inside the building were the best, we made sure to get to these areas first. will post a pic of the donor.......

plywood going on ( another freebee salvage item), iirc we got 30 sheets of 3/8 ply........
all wall material except osb and windows, doors etc came from our neighbors warehouse which was going to be demolished as soon as we were done getting what we needed. This thing was full of really nice straight lumber, I wish that I had some more storage at the time, alot of really good stuff got demolished.

made the workbench out of left over lumber, 16 ft long. the shelf unit on the right was also a salvage item, took it to work and powder coated it, it has a patent stamp in the shelf dividers dated "apr 13 1920"......

maje16 from Illinois,

Looks great man. Where in Illinois are you ?. I'm in the far northwest Chicago suburbs.

Btw,

Can you fill me in on your slab construction ?. I am considering the same size myself in the near future and was kind of wondering how far you had to dig. I'm thinking at least 36" in this area.

Thanks,
Ed

Ed,
Near the Quad Cities, far west of the state...
The foundation was dug 36", code in this area called for this since I went to max allowable sq ft of 960. I think from what I recall, over 800 sq ft they wont let you have a floating slab. I would have liked to build bigger, or do 2 buildings, but because of in town restrictions........

Thanks Martin,

I really love that part of the state. I went out to Davenport with my dad not to long ago. We did some great country driving that weekend. Thanks for the slab info. The two building idea gave me some thoughts.

Worked a little more on the bench/ cabinet wall yesterday. The whole garage is a complete mess and I can hardly move. Its amazing how much stuff you have when it is all over the floor!!!!!
I really didnt care for the pegboard look anymore and wanted a more uncluttered look.
Almost ready for the bench build and install of the craftsman cabinets (2 floor and 2 wall). Finally got to trim the windows out and cover all the exposed wall framing. Then spent a few hours painting. Long way to go but looking better.....

I like this.
I would do some things different, but
It is a WORK shop, not a show shop.
You will know you are done when you always have something more inportant to do.

Awesome DIY!

So.. Do you like to fix and flip cars, or are you just a mid-90s GM fan?

Was parting out trucks for a while, always liked the 90s stuff, mainly full size gm, have always had b bodies as drivers as well. (similar to the stuff gm made back home)-im an aussie. Buicks in the pics were a waste of time, cavalier is my step daughters, also have a 99 suburban as well as the 90.
So, you could say I am a BIG fan of the bigger stuff, not so much the smaller.....Gas prices dont really influence what I drive ( gas is still a lot less over here than back home) so I stick with stuff I like and like to work on
lets see....
Drivers at the moment - 89 caprice, 93 caprice, 96 caprice, 90 suburban, 99 suburban,
the jimmy is a 89 just taking up room so it will be going soon.

I enjoyed fixing and selling back home, but in this area (quad cities IL) buying is good, selling is not so good.

Martin, I saw the "Anchor Lumber" housewrap, and figured you were close. I am in the QC also. Welcome to the WET neighborhood. lol. This much rain is pretty unusual. Everything is pretty saturated. Good looking build, and thanks for the pics.

Ah, the rain......
I work on 13th street (across from harvester works) and Friday was a blast..........
We were lucky, had to sandbag, but it didnt get us too bad, other businesses near werent so lucky, and I seen quite a few houses around the morton drive area get real wet as well.
Hey, even seen two guys around 8.30 in the morning floating past work on a air mattress complete with snow shovel oars.....now thats entertainment.
Anyway, at home weve just planted a few trees and some grass around the driveway area of the garage so the rain is good....
I guess good for some is not for others...

I hear you loud and clear on that one.

Luckily, I have a pretty good source for fixer uppers and a short drive to a major city to pick them up, and can sell them for a good price back here.
