Hello, I just joined TGJ. Love it already.
Have any of you ever watched the Make it Extreme series on youtube. This GUY is a Master Craftsman in a Machine Shop. Check out the Vise he builds from scratch. Most Badass Vise I have ever seen. I've got to have one of these.

I just skipped through the first few minutes. First thing I saw was handling metal while wearing Chuck Taylors. 0:54 Even worse I saw operating a lathe in long sleeves, and at times, an unzipped jacket. The Chucks will get you a broken toe...The jacket will get you a closed casket viewing. I stopped watching after that.

I want to see how he made those dovetails !

Also with jaws that open that wide, you know it will be used as a press. The channel will bend, especially when the BFH is applied to the handle on that lead screw.

Impressive sell but just not my cup of tea.
For all the fabricating this guy was willing to do, he then goes and uses that C channel slide.
As mentioned above it appears too light for the job...

I think he is in Greece, so he is pretty good working with what he has to work with.

I agree.

The haters are hatin' big time on this guy.

I like that he doesn't stand around jabbering trying to impress everyone. He just does his thing without a single word.

I'm not hatin' and I'm not a safety Nazi, but I do question this. :shocking:

I am also not a hater, but I generally choose not to watch his stuff.
It just don't appeal to me mostly, but I say he does a pretty good job and it is easy to criticise somebody else.

He is way a head of me in many ways, but he does leave himself open to some poor practices.

I worked with a guy who got caught up in a lathe caused by clothing and he did not work again for years and never back to his trade, it really did a number on his neck and shoulder when it pulled him in...

I wouldn't cal him a craftsman or a master machinist either. But I would call him a fabricator working with what he had on hand, and I'd sooner watch him before ChuckE2009.

No Joke, ChuckE2009 is pretty annoying...
I watched a bit of Make it Extreme stuff... unimpressed...

Want to see an incredible vise build? Oxtool (Tom Lipton) and the Baby Wilton Bullet...

Used to love ChuckE when he was still fabricating and welding, he should have just started a second channel for his "farming" and mechanical misadventures rather than turning a lot of his long time viewers away with the sudden and major channel shift into stuff he has no clue about :headscrat

To me the Oxtool stuff and other machine vids is just the same old machining vids.

My dad worked at RCA astro for 37 yrs, my best friends dad was the head of Sarnoff research machine shop and I was a machinist for , I don't know 28 yrs. I've seen a lot of cool stuff.

For a guy to take a cut off disk, a hand drill and a welder make some of the stuff he does, I'd say he's doing all right.

I would like to see some of the work by the Negative Nancy types in this thread so everyone also gets to judge THEIR work, skill level, and processes.

Yeah, I'm not trying to start an argument with anyone.

But, its obvious this guy isn't working in a state of the art, or even well equipped machine shop.

I bet he is probably motivating a lot of people to get in the shop and make **** with some basic tools.

In general I enjoy watching anyone fab anything. I've seen some vids of guys in 3rd world countries fabricating some fairly complex stuff wearing no shoes, welding with no glasses/hood or gloves, etc. Though I agree with your observations about safety and risk, I do appreciate the art as entertainment.

Regarding Make it Extreme - they do build some cool stuff and I'd say I've watched maybe 75% of their builds and bail on about 1/4 of them somewhere part way in. Some are crazy motorcycles and hydraulic tools. Though the stuff looks cool, I'd never personally operate or drive any of 'em no more than I'd want to be involved in any of the car crashes or stupid human tricks that get published to YouTube either.

Cyprus is fairly cosmopolitan, it isn't a fifth world country... he uses a lathe regularly and a mill as well... I would not call it "Crude" by a long shot... he also uses a Dry Cut Chop Saw... I've seen him use a plasma Cutter... the Welding is generally Stick for some reason... they DO have MIG welders and TIG Welders on Cyprus...

I haven't watched the channel, so i'll reserve judgement, but sounds much like the backyard machinists up in finland. Those guys make anything from scrap metal with a file. Crazy what they come up with.
