Make my own HF 41" intermediate chest?

So I had my wife pick this up for me today. I found it on Craigslist for 50 bucks. I have no idea the manufacturer but it seems well built (and I don't think they make **** this big.

Anyway, it measures a bit under 39" by 17.5" and the HF 41" box measures 41.25" by 17.5". I am thinking that I could clean it up, paint it to match the HF box I already have and then squeeze it in between my top and bottom. I figure I could make a filler to go on either side of this that would help to support the top box just in case this wasn't quite designed for it. Although I do know that this was designed to have something on top as there are 8 indents in the top where feet of another cab presumably would sit.

My other thought is to just clean it up and then slide it onto the bottom shelf of my workbench. I don't know that I need the space on my roller. I am guessing if it went under the workbench it would become a small parts cabinet; a really big one.

Commercial or industrial stuff like those drawers are built strong and cost a fortune new. I am keeping my eye out for one local that I can put on a shelf in a commercial storage rack. I don't think I would try to use it as a intermediate box, but depends on what you like.

First step, forget how cheap you picked it up for, its like a $1k originally, so treat it right and use it well. Parts or tools, I would use it for secondary storage, as it won't hold all my main tools, those will stay in big box. Figure out what category of stuff you have that will fit well and be handy to have in the same drawer etc. My first split out was all the SAE sockets and wrenches going into a intermediate box on a shelf to make space in the main box.

As to intermediate box use: the box on top is the same size? smaller? bigger? If the same size, I'd jut go for it if tat is what you want. If not the same size, cut a piece of 1/2" ply the size of the largest dimensions of either box, width and depth, and you can still go for it. the key is getting the load onto the outside and back vertical panels.

I'd tack some pieces of 1" square tubing vertically at each corner (on the ends). That'll give you your 41" width (or go with 1¼" and get a 41½" width) and a support structure for the top chest.

The indentations on the top of your new cabinet are a clear indicator that it was designed to be stacked.
