For my barn I'm going to be building a 2 barrel stove. I've got 1 barrel now, and it's rusted through after 3 years. (Thus is my own fault long story.) So I'm re doing it only gonna go it right this time. (Flashing in roof issue.) Question is for any one who runs one. What to line the bottom with. I've read just ash, or sand. Which is better though. How bout pea stone? Not looking to get too crazy though, trying to keep it inexpensive.
Thanks fellas.

Ayuh,.... I ran one in my garage for years, used to live in a house heated with one,....

Ash is all that was ever used to line the barrel bottom,....

A guy I know built on from a kit from tractor supply, He poured some kind of cement in the bottom and pushed fire bricks into it, he used my saw to cut and fit them in the bottom.

never put anything in the bottom but ash, we have used them on and off sense 1980. If you can find barrels that are food grade they are usually heaver.

+You can make a cast in liner from fire clay. It will last a long time and not be messy like loose ashes.

usually just sand, refractory cement is expensive, have seen people use field stones but they can split if they have moisture encased in them so I tend to shy away from that method...
