I am getting ready to plan out a bench for the garage. I plan on using square tubing for the legs and maybe weld in some gussets. I plan on making it 12ft x 3ft. I plan on putting heavy stuff on here like heads. I want to make sure it does not rock and it needs to be solid. Maybe a shelf below and may make it in 2 sections to install easier and maybe move at a later date. What size of square tubing should I use and how many legs? Besides more than 4 if one piece or 8 if 2 pieces. What would be a good top for the bench?

3/8 or thicker steel for the top. Then you can beat on it or lay some beads with out worrying about top warpage or bending.

1/8th" would be plenty for the legs. Gussets are a good idea but steel with stretchers holding the shelf won't tend to move. If 2 sections see that they can bolt together. Many would be happy with a lumber top covered with a sheet of galvanized for heads and even transmissions. Depending on the abuse anticipated you would choose the gauge of thickness. 16 or 18 are fairly tough.
Probably not what your looking for but here is what I have going. Two bowling ally landings together on a frame with casters. I can move it around the shop to where I need it. I tested it tonight with a 40's made lathe I need to spruce up. The lathe is pretty heavy.
