Making a DIY after cooler

I came across a transmission cooler that measures 7 inches by 12 inches and is rated to 150PSI.

The only issue is the diameter of the tubing is only 3/8th of an inch, I currently have a 1/2 inch tube connecting my pump to the check valve on the tank. Will I be hurting my CFM and tank fill times by downgrading to a 3/8th inch tube over 1/2 inch?

I'm going to guess, yes and 150psi is too close to the shutoff for me, I'd like a lil more cushion for the pushin

Right now it's 78*, "feels like" 84* with a 90% humidity...Tomorrow it should get to around 94* with a "feels like" temp of 102* and humidity will drop to about 60%.

Everybody should wear a toga or a towel, dry off on the run. Might be interesting tho, sweaty girl toga sticking to her, mmm, nevermind.

My shut off is 125 psi

I have a single stage pump and it struggles past that so no sense in letting it over work itself.

You are looking at almost half the area cross-section, so yes it will adversely affect your cfm and operation of your compressor. You do not want to reduce the pipe size leaving the compressor. Maybe you could use two and connect them in parallel.

If the pressure switch turns the air compressor off at 125 PSIG and the cooler is rated for 350F at 150PSIG then the cooler will be fine for the application.

The flow rate (CFM) is not going to be affected by the smaller diameter tubes, but there may be a pressure drop across the cooler that will lower the pressure that is realized at the point of use.

You will be disappointed in the performance of this transmission cooler. Due to about the half the area cross section the air velocity in the pipe will be significantly increased, thereby negating any benefit the "cooler" may have had. Don't know how many bends in the cooler but that may cause a back pressure against the output of the piston. There are all kinds of downside to restricting airflow from the compressor. Size it correctly.

If you can get another trans cooler and run them in parallel that you would be in good shape

I am going to hold off on the cooler.

Buddy of mine gave me about 40 feet of 3/4 inch coil copper and I added it to my existing 30 feet, now I have somewhere between 60-70 feet of copper before my two separators and it seems all the water is being removed now.

Sounds like a good buddy! Do you have "drops" in the copper cooler between the pump and two separators with ball valves or how did you set yours up? I need to build an after cooler myself and am looking at options.

^ 105 heat index for North Texas Friday, bet you cant beat that. Unless its Phoenix. 112 at midnight and wear gloves to get in the car. And not a carport in sight. HOA must rule the town.

It will be 75 with a 75 heat index & 95% humidity at 6am and 92 with a projected 104 heat index & 95% humidity at 6pm. You got me by one

I don't think I could do Phoenix in the summer, though I did live in Dallas a couple years and the heat index was right up there with it back then.

Would love to live in that cabin in that valley on the show Longmire, mmmm, looks a beaut, only have to worry about bears and big cats, and snow drifts, and running outta gas, wonder where they film that part of the show ?
