Looks like he did a pretty good job keeping discoloration down when welding that stainless. I have to wonder though why not use threads?

Sorry I should clarify, its me making it.

I welded it because threads is annoying I have a drill press handle that constantly unthreads.

Very nice video!
I personally would prefer it to be threaded and not welded. IMO it would look a little nicer.

Yeah the problem with that is they tend to come undone. So, if you loctite it well, then you may have just welded it anyway. If I wipe it with acetone the TIG heat zone will go away and be less noticeable.

Well done video and excellent welding skills.

good vid,i think threads would have been cleaner at the ends instead of welds,but i understand the unscrewing thing.what if you were to chamfer the end of the rod where it meets the bearing,fill with weld and then cut the weld smooth.you could do the first end in the lathe,and would have to hand grind the other.just an idea.

I was originally going to plug weld it - I was going to drill the ball bearing through and turn the shaft down so that it nearly stuck out and weld it on the outside of the ball bearing, then turn it in the lathe, but I can't maintain the radius of the ball if I did that as I don't have a ball and radius tool. I could also only have done that for one end of the rod as I need to feed the rod through the vise jaw and weld the other ball, and wouldn't have been able to turn the other end.

The only real way to have made it ultimately clean is to have tapped the ball and threaded the rod. I can try that, but I am not very good with threading on the lathe yet. I have only had this lathe for a couple or few weeks now. I know it can do threading and I do have the 60 deg tooling for threading, I have just never done it. Maybe I should try? I really just wanted to weld, too lol.

I'll watch try and read up on turning thread on a rod with the lathe and see what I can come up with. I have enough material to try it with.
