I would like to suggest a way to save a few bucks on this project. I think you could remove those costly cinder blocks you are planning to use and just put that stand directly on the river rock next to your house. Should be fine....:spit:

Looks like a great table for filling flower pots with dirt. Still waiting for the failure photos, and the next build thread.

I have a total of 5-55 gallon rain barrels at my house for my veggie garden and i used cut-down pallets to support them since i know that they will support the weight and i only stacked them 3 high so even if they did topple over, they dont have far to go. Plus they are in a place that nothing can get hurt of they do happen to fall. But there is NO way in hell i'd put them up that high without substantial support!!! I mean, damn, he used 2x2's so they're really 1 1/2" then he half-lapped the joints so cut any strength in half at least. I used doubled up 2x4's as legs for a workbench that'll see maybe 300lbs max, overkill yes but it wont fail.

The suspense is killer. I'm very curious how strong the lap joints were. Sad how popular this thread has been and it's been almost a month since the OP posted. Hope everything is fine and the barrels are still in working order.

It's obvious he's chosen not to respond anymore as he has logged on numerous times, as recently as 2 days ago.

no need for OP to be embarrassed or shy away . this thread is all constructive criticism (IMO)
we all gain and share tons of knowledge on here .

I agree. We can't all be experts on everything. It's pretty obvious this design could have severe consequences. I think most people were just trying to be helpful.

Ditto. I’m the first one to advertise my blunders in hopes of saving another person the pain

Has it occurred to anyone that this may be just an elaborate joke that the OP is playing. Ambenz has always appeared to be relatively intelligent so he may well be just sitting back waiting to see all the remarks being made over this obviously ridiculous project that he had no real intention of building. He will eventually chime in when he sees adequate responses and laugh along with everyone.:)

Nope. But if that’s the “out” he needs to put this to bed then so be it

Photos earlier in thread sure makes it look like it was being built.

Pretty good step by step images.

I just want to be assured NO Stang was harmed during production or use of said "Rain Barrel Stand".

My 'guess' is if his design actually held up, he'd be back posting in this thread to show us we were all wrong. If his design failed, he doesn't want to come back and face the music from the "I told you so" crowd.

Sometimes is just better to just admit when you're wrong, learn from your mistake, and move forward.

He should build a hidden frame out of square tubing that would fit inside the wooden structure, then post a picture of it in-place and full... lol...

If anything, this thread proves a point that the OP controls what he or she decides to share!
When the same members of the forum who corrupt threads with there incessant swill of stupid posts and blaint jabs decide to muddy the original thread, WHY CONTINUE IT?
If you want to see a thread thru completion, you might want to lighten up on the stupid posting. Understanding that when the whole thread is finished, you might understand why something was done a certain way even when it made no sense in the beginning. So, my absence on the post was a protest of some members of the forum who post comments to continue digs! The criticism is expected and respected to a point... I get it. The forum isn't what it use to be when I joined and I will be more selective in what I share.
You should all know that the barrel stand in assembled in place and collects rain and condensate water smartly and in a safe and handy way. The cabinet sits on a "beam" that provides additional support when the rain barrels are full to the downspout. It is a closed system where "critters" cannot spawn. The whole unit sits on a patio blocks laid out on top of a bed of pea gravel and paver sand.

I decided not to share anymore information and pictures on the subject in protest of those who would just continue to post stupid comments. Next time you want to post, think about how you come across to the poster....and the control they have over the thread they freely share, for your enjoyment.
Admin can close this thread as I will not be sharing any more info on this thread.....

You control nothing except the picture drawn of you, by you.
Are you Happy with it?
Want to Maybe rethink what appears as a tantrum and remove that post?
If you do I'll remove this one.
Just some friendly advice, nothing else.

" The cabinet sits on a "beam" that provides additional support when the rain barrels are full to the downspout."

That beam, depending how done, could make a night and day difference in this project.

Sounds like you have it figured out.

Good to hear.

While I can agree, some came off as condescending. I hope you know a vast majority of us were trying to provide constructive criticism. I'm glad you didn't leave GJ for good. I hope this experience hasn't ruined the forum for you.

I personally think that if one can step back and look at the thread objectively, the theme I see most is for the OP's safety. Some posts are barbed more than others and some poke fun...But.....when one sees the atypical volume of posts indicating a problem there should probably be 1 of 2 conclusions drawn: a) that people are just "piling on" or b) there is a serious issue(s) with the design to be addressed.

Importantly, all is well and no-one injured. At least he added some kind of a beam. That would be a picture to post.

ambenz please forgive me! I didn't want to pile on but after reading all 6 pages, biting my lip and wringing my wrists I couldn't keep it to myself and have to post my joke....

At least this post is consistent with your rain barrel stand design.

And that's pretty much all you can say about either one.

Most people would just buy a water barrel and prop it up on a cinderblock, but no, not this guy.
So as I am waiting for Menards to bring back there 11% rebate so I can buy 2 water barrels, I decided to get started on a tall stand for the water barrels to sit on, allowing me easy access to the spigots.
It is a work in progress as I won't be finished for a while.
You're just gonna to have to follow along.
Now, I do not live out in the country, I live in a "Mayberry" type residential community.
So the rain barrels and stand have to look.... "NICE".
Refined..... Like it is a designed piece of outdoor furniture.
The dolling up faze of the project might break the bank...UG!
I want to add lattice, door fronts with hinges, a top...the bottom is to store my hose reel as it stands next to the house back wall.
It needs varment screens to keep out critters too.

The design concept...

Not being a welder or working with metal, this project is a low budget wood project.
A lot of thought has to go into a project like this..so far we are about $12 USD into it...trying to keep cost under $30.
Now since a US liquid gallon of water weighs about 8.34 pounds or 3.78 kilograms at 62 °F (17 °C), 2 50 gallon barrels on a stand would bring to bear close to 834 pounds or 378.296 Kilograms....that's a lot of weight.
Close to a 1/2 ton! Bought outdoor pressure treated 2X2's and engineering in a bunch of support while trying not to make it bulky...progress so far...

Lap joint the top frame and engineered the first leg for the rain barrel table...

I got all 4 legs on the rain barrel table. the table saw I am trying to sell for $150 is coming in handy. I am gonna miss it for projects like this.

Opposite view of the saw that is For Sale, if you're interested.....got all 4 legs on the rain barrel table. the table saw I am trying to sell for $150 is coming in handy. I am gonna miss it for projects like this.
Love working out on the driveway, nice breeze, low humidity, and full sun! Man, can I see what I am doing!!!
https://scontent-ort2-2.**.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/36802662_2333505736675958_2982277479042908160_n.jpg?_nc_cat=0&oh=1ca4f92a41e54ec38124970d26ac2cfe&oe=5BD7FEAD

Bottom supports for the legs are going on. Starting to look like a cabinet now.
https://scontent-ort2-2.**.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/36744856_2333505830009282_7385125858073116672_n.jpg?_nc_cat=0&oh=da3c199096c21fcacd9b7d45e8643e96&oe=5BE00409

Braced structure is screwed and outdoor wood glued as it may need to hold almost a half ton!
https://scontent-ort2-2.**.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/36757396_2333505866675945_3995197055688507392_n.jpg?_nc_cat=0&oh=19c67af0c57c49b35e5d5ab8cec692ba&oe=5BE38AA1

Menards had cement fibreboard siding on sale at $8 for 12 feet. I cut it in 3 sections and will be using that for the tabletop, cauking the space between the joints...not a bad price for a water and UV resistant tabletop!
The top puts the cost of the table at $20 so far...the side lattice is gonna be expensive...it may break the bank on this build.

There's no way - *no* way - that this is real.

This is a joke - right? Right?
