I'm looking at making some totes to store my extension chords and air hoses at work, something similar to this:

I'm thinking of 3/4" plywood as the base material, and am thinking how to protect the wood from an industrial environment subject to oil, hydraulic fluid, etc. I did some research and it seems something like a rubberized undercoat like this might do the job.

Would Plasti-dip, spray-on truck bed liner, or enamel engine paint be more suitable? I guess the more important question would be which option is most durable?

Get a sheet of HDPE (cutting board material) and use it...it's already waterproof, oil/grease will wipe off, and it's textured. You could get a cutting board at WalMart or any home goods/cooking supply store and cut it to your pattern

Or

Just pick up a cord holder

AL would be cool as well. Maybe 4 FN 27 would cut some for you.

If you want to waterproof a wood box the best thing I have found is Red Guard from Home Depot. It's a brush on waterproofing for tile showers and if you dont care about brush strokes, it rocks. It can be thinned with water and sprayed for a smooth finish, lots of thin coats.

Danish oil works pretty good also on wood, water just beads off and can be touched up without sanding down.
However I've found most ply recently to be junk (mainly as a lot of it sold in my area is Chinese and their "exterior grade" is anything but)

As someone older and wiser told me years ago - stop trying to reinvent the wheel, if there's a decent solution on the shelf...use it.
