Do you have enough clearance under the oil pan with the girdle or will you have to modify the pan?

If there is clearance, I recon you'd get a couple more quarts in there now (or maybe it will just make it easier to keep the crank out of the oil).

It's all pretty impressive Sean. :3gears:

I am using a custom oil pan and yes it will have more capacity than stock.. part of the reason is that I am using a belt driven external oil pump.... Oil will come from the side of the pan to the pump instead of the stock setup pump that ***** from the pickup in the pan.

That is a huge lift kit - would you ever run a Duramax?

I've got an 05 2500 - and I've put a good amount of work into it in the last year - and most recently used it to move all the **** out of my house - sad thing is I haven't even towed anything with it!

Thanks for looking... I avoid Diesel engines because it gets so cold here and they are tough to start when it is -40... There is not always a place to plug in the block heater so I prefer the gas engines. I do not tow much though so the gas are okay.

Nothing too exciting here just tearing down my latest engine to ser what its like... It passed the leak down test, but needs some cleaning at least. Nothing too exciting and nothing broken so I am puting it back together and taking it to my little house to store as a spare core for potential rebuild. I tag them with some notes so I know which ones are in what condition and which ones are ready to run.

Snow storm here! Good news is I get 3 days off!!

I drove out to my little house and ordered some parts for my truck from the tractor shop after hitting a deer at 80 MPH and damaging the bumper and a fender flare:

Iron Cross Push Bar Front Bumper
8500 Pound Winch
New passenger side rear fender flare

I will install them in a few weeks when they get here...

1 mile away from my little house is Bellis Beach, a lake that is stocked. We drilled a hole and caught a few fish... Tossed them back and had a BBQ with burgers instead LOL!

Had to blaze a trail into the acreage:

Headlight out so I changed that out, always have spares!

part way into the property:

3 feet of snow but the GMC does not mind! Most of the time it stayed on the top layer but if it broke through it was still able to get through.

Yes that is the spot I am going to build the shop! Not sure when I will have it built but I am planning it now... It is on 4 acreages just 1 mile off the highway... The first step will be fencing the area, setting up a mobile home, and then building my dream shop.

Today I completed a test of my garage heater to see how quickly it heats the space. It is 12 degrees F (-12 C) outside and the garage was at 32F (0 C) when I turned on the heater. In 90 minutes it brought the garage to 53 F (12 C) which is what I had the thermostat set to. I am not sure if this is good or not but I found it interesting.... Shane and I are heading to the garage to play...

Questions:

Since I'm about to buy a junkyard motor, do leakdown tests on stone cold motors still count for something? You just just keep it in mind, compare cylinders relative to each other?

I know the Big Three are finally paying attention to aerodynamics on pickup trucks, especially underneath. Are there belly pans on these things? Since you have a lift kit, and actually need it, no way an air dam is practical to help your mpg, but a belly pan would be the other solution (see ecomodder.com for a thousand tips) and a nice thick aluminum pan like rally cars have, would that make it harder to high-center your truck on snow drifts?

With the leakdown test it can be completed with a cold engine however sometimes the numbers may be low due to a cold piston not expanding to make a tighter fit. In this case I had 4% leakdown loss with it cold on each cylinder. I am sure when warm it would be 2 or 3% leakage. This just confirmed that all the pistons and valves are sealing, there may well be other issues such as a spun bearing... You can actually take a sample of the oil and send it to blackstone labs and they will tell you if there is any bearing material in the oil, that could save a BIG headache buying a used engine!

Sean that looks like it was fun as hell!

Thanks, yes it was fun.... Once I get the winch installed it will be even more fun:thumbup:

First an update on my old project car! Blakes work:

He has the new suspension and 4 wheel disks installed. Engine and trans go in next week!

Re wired the new fog lights with on/ off factory switch and dimmer:

Roy trimming the bumper for a custom fit for the winch:

The rough cut before we cleaned it up and painted it:

I cranked up the torsion bar pre load to raise the front suspension 1 inch to get the front end back up to where it sat before the bumper instal and re set the alignment. I added 150 pounds to the front end with the winch and bumper combo and it had set the front down 1 inch from before.

How it sits with a 450 pound engine in the back:

Put my spare 350 in the shed:

Sean, I take back what I said in that other thread earlier today about firewood and old batteries. You want better snow traction? Carry around some old Chevy small blocks in the bed! :bounce:

Naw the Chevy 350s are too heavy at 630 pounds, the Buick 350s are almost 200 pounds lighter! I will say that we got 10 inches of fresh snow last night and i was out driving around before the plow was out.... I left the truck in 2 wheel drive and with the engine secured in the back the truck had great traction.

Sorry i missed your question about the under belly pan for the truck...

There are full steel skid pans under the truck to protect everything vital, and while you may have a good idea I think it would be too much surface area against the snow vs just having the plates covering about 20% of the underside... No doubt larger tires would help big time in the deep snow but i enjoy the better fuel mileage and more power up hills with the smaller tires.

Thanks for stopping by!

No garage work done but some Muscle car Education. He turns the pages himself and squeels at the cars he likes... So far he prefers the yellow, red, and white cars!

Its his favorite book! Big pictures!

For sure you can be Shane Buick's Godfather! I really do value the support and encouragement you "garage guys" provide!

When I see you guys getting so much work done, I feel the need to do my best to get my projects done too! If it wasn't for you guys I would not get as much work done.
