I roughed in 3 boxes for pendant lights over the kitchen island. I want small pendants but when I see what is out there and what the prices are, I think I would prefer to make my own. Any sources or information on rolling my own would be much appreciated.

all you need is a socket for functionality, then put all the foo foo on it so that it looks cool.
A couple hints:
It's generally best to not be able to see the light source, so hide it behind something or recess it or diffuse it.
Dimming in kitchens is a big plus. High light levels for cooking, chopping, lower light levels for entertaining.
For pendants, make sure that your source will have enough space to angle out so that you cover the target (like a counter top) with plenty of light. You dont want little spots of light on your target.
Good luck,
CD
