So my pole barn has 9ft to the bottom of the rafters. I want to put a hoist in here desperately. I have a span in the back, its 8ft between each rafter. Room dimensions are 24'x16'. What I want to ask, is could I make a saddle on the center truss, and span two 2"x8"s accross to the two adjoining ones? That way I could eliminate the bottom stringer. 2x8s would be glued and screwed, either end supported by existing poles. This would net me a little over two foot clearance. Thus allowing me to pick up my truck to a comfortable working height. If this is not feasible, I will have to wait to do a 16 foot addition off the end of the barn. Any help is appreciated.
