Hello GJ Friends:
The other day an early 1950's Cman #103.23141 drill press with mortising attachment stowed away in the back of my truck and came home with me.
Although everything works as it should, I decided that the 3 long bolts used as feed handles had to be replaced.
I decided to make my own set using shorter bolts and golf balls.
I thought I'd share how I made mine:
1st picture: Materials needed. 3 golf balls and 3, 3/8 -16 bolts.
2nd picture: The golf ball is clamped into a lathe chuck to be drilled out. The hole must be at top dead center. Placing an indicator in the drill chuck will ensure that my drilling location will be correct.
A 6" / 3 jaw metal lathe chuck is great for holding round or ball shaped workpieces. Usually found for $50 at used machinery dealers.
3rd picture) Normally I would use a center finder drill bit to place a small hole at top dead center. It was easier to use a long shank countersink bit.
4th picture) I drilled a 5/8" hole in the golf ball about 1.25" deep. Not pictured is a 5/16" pilot hole I first drilled into the golf ball to make drilling with the larger bit smoother.
5th picture) The hole is drilled and 3/8" bolt pressed in.
6th picture) To seal the bolt in the golf ball, I filled it with hot melt glue.
7th picture) The finished product. Feels comfortable to use.
