I bought a makita 3/8 impact driver several years ago and only used it a few times because the friction/hog ring doesn’t hold any sockets in place. Life got busy and I haven’t had much need or opportunity to use it. Now that I’m wanting to use it again I’d like to solve the issue. I haven’t used actual impact sockets on it and am getting a set soon, but shouldn’t normal hand tool sockets stay on as well? I’ve noticed that some of my newish sockets have notches cut inside where they attach to the wrench and those sorta stay on loosely but slide all the way forward until the ring catches them. In general though, just about every socket or extension i put on there falls to to the floor if I point it down. I know the friction rings can be replaced, but want some input to see if I’m doing something wrong before I try replacing it. Perhaps a larger rubber o-ring under the friction ring?

If your using chrome sockets/extension bars that's your problem and why they are loose with a hog ring anvil.

If your not willing to spring for the correct impact type socket anytime soon, at the very least get yourself some impact extensions and adapters for a better fit. They will have a spring ball end better to retain your chrome socket.

HF has a set of extension bars and it's only like $6 with 20% off coupon.
The little 3/8" x 3/8" x 1 3/4" extension is just right for a stubby adapter

Thanks. I’m ordering a set of SK impact sockets soon and will pick up some extensions as well. I figured I might have better luck with actual impact sockets
