I've had my Makita cordless drill for 4 years now and it was used to build the garage, it's been a great bit of kit and capable of doing some heavy duty work. However I was using it the other day to drill a small hole in some brickwork when it decided to stop working, I stripped it down and found a slightly worn part in the gearbox was causing it to jam. As per the usual the worn parts are not available separately and further investigation found a complete new gearbox for the princely sum of £36.00. A bit more surfing on the net revealed a complete new drill package with 3 batteries and charger was £249.00, so after another look at what was available I came across what is known as a 'naked machine' which is the drill without battery or charger but it does come in a case. These were available for the cost of £36.00 each so I decided this would be the best route to take as I already have 3 batteries and a charger. 2 'naked machines' were ordered on Monday and arrived yesterday. A bargain indeed

Thanks for the info. I have the same brand, 2-year old in 18-volts and is an excellent drill.

However, generally the batteries in ALL cordless drills are the weakest component and the highest cost. Which is why I have been going back to USED corded drills, made in the USA. :)

Thanks,
Steve

The True Value near where I work is clearing out some old Makita stock.

They have the 8444 MXT hammer drill/driver with two batteries and a charger for $200, and a combo with the same plus a reciprocating saw for $300.

Are those good prices?

I would guess so. My standard 1/2" Makita with charger and two lith-ion 18v batteries in a plastic case was about $180 two years ago (Home Depot).

Sorry I don't, the good news is I managed to find a roller needle the correct size amongst my bits and pieces and rebuilt the gearbox and it is now working again, not sure how long it will last but at least I have a couple of spares for when it packs in.
