Looking through all the combo kits for a gift for Dad and they all they seem to offer is the hammer-drill driver. What gives? If you aren't going to use the hammer-drill feature, should I just avoid the combo kits and just buy a regular drill and the stuff he needs? Surely going to be way more expensive.

bmwpower - I noticed that too, I'm not sure why they do that. As mentioned in the linked thread, if I need hammer drill feature I'm pulling out my corded Milkwaukee.

Do the kits you are looking at include the BHP452? Most (all?) of the kits I looked at had the BHP452 as the drill. I was more looking at the BDF451 which has more torque and an extra speed. But I couldn't find it in a kit and the drill alone was around $300 from amazon with kits starting slightly more than that.

Do to the lack of feedback, I haven't bought the BDF451 yet...

I have this kit,http://www.makita.com/en-us/Modules/Tools/ToolDetails.aspx?Name=LXT211 and have been very happy with it. the impact is powerful and the the drill / hammer drill works great as just a drill. I have only used the hammer drill a few times with 1/4 bits and it seemed to work fine.

+1 That is the same kit I replaced my trusty old 9.6 Makita with great drill and impact. Best price I found was from Expresstools.com. Fast shipping good price and new not reconditioned tools.

I think the LXT211 kit comes with the BHP452. I have read good reviews on that and what you guys are saying backs that up. However, I can't help but wonder how good the BDF451 is:

I'm guessing it is because of price point or that it is included in a kit, but the BDF452HW seems to have a lot more information / reviews out there. (237 reviews on Amazon vs. 11 for the BDF451)
