Makita Power Planer Depth Adjustment

Hello, I have a Makita power planer 1900B, its an older model but cuts well. I am having issues with the depth adjustment knob spinning freely while the planer is operating. This, of course, is troublesome trying to keep my depth consistent while running my cuts. Any suggestions, ideas or is this normal and just needs to be held while using the planer? Thanks in advance.

Either the knob threads are stripped, the front base threads are stripped, or the spring inside isnt keeping pressure.
I would unscrew it completely and see which of these is the verdict.
