Male to male socket extension?

I searched a bit, what are these for? Saw one just now on ebay, can't think what I'd ever need it for.

And also I have a nice 60s sort of 1/4" drive socket set which includes a double end female piece. Like you could arm wrestle two rachets against each other. Every time I see that piece, wonder what the hell it's for.

Do you have a pic? It may be for old school ratchets that only turn in one direction. To go the other direction you would push the anvil through the other side.

Maybe just a coupler that uses standard size tooling to make. Seems like I've seen something similar for a vehicle scissor jack cranker.

Tried to steal a picture off ebay, no dice. It's about a 6" extension with a normal looking male end on both ends.

Sounds like your looking at a shaft for a ratcheting screwdriver.

Some of snap-on's ratcheting screwdrivers have removable shafts. The end inside the handle is 1/4 inch male drive. The other end is whatever, including, of course, 1/4 drive. And they come in different lengths, too.

A male to male extension of whatever length fits a female ratchet just like larry g posted.

So the one larry g shows gets pushed thru, the one you show gets pulled out then inserted in the other side. How old is a ratchet like that? I've seen them, but never had one.

That one's a Craftsman with a manufacturer code of BE (New Britian), so acc'd to the Craftsman Hand Tool Manufacturers & Date Ranges thread chart it's 1931 to 1947.

BUT, that was just an example I found an image with both the ratchet and an extension like you described. You can still buy new female ratchets today. To use a female ratchet for a socket you would need a male-to-male extension of some length. We use them at work for machines that have 1/2" square shaft adjustment mechanisms.

All we can do is guess when we aren't given necessary details in the original post.
I personally own these extensions in all three drive sizes, and they all serve different purposes.

I’m trying to recall the name of it because this question has been posed before…

Craftsman, sometime in the mid to late 2000’s, made a ratcheting socket driver. The handle accepted the male end of an extension bar and the other end of the extension was also male for the socket. The kit was made in the USA. I saw one listed on eBay recently for an insane amount of money. If someone can find it, that would be awesome. I looked and couldn’t seem to track it down.

1/2" square drive male to male extensions
used with 1/2" square female drive ratchets
can be joined together using 1/2" square female X 1/2" square female coupler.

Stevens Walden was still peddling socket sets using this type of system clear into the 1970s. (The "coupler" is to the immediate left of the 3/8" square male x 3/8" square male extension. This set-up makes absolutely no sense when you consider that the ratchet is 3/8" square male drive.)
