Man Cave Flooring Ideas

Hello all.

I have just recently built a 40 x 60 pole barn. Inside that, I have built a 20'x24' "man cave". I am looking for some flooring ideas/suggestions for just this portion of the building. The concrete is brand new (6 months old) with nothing on it.

I was thinking of just using a high gloss sealer or maybe even dying it a cool rustic color to go with the barn theme. Then I got to thinking about epoxy, tiles, ect. With so many options I am finding it hard to make a decision. I am on a pretty tight budget and do not want to spend a lot but want it to look good as well.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
If you are looking for a rustic look that is inexpensive but much better performing than a sealer, consider staining the floor and then putting on a coat of clear one part polyaspartic/polyurea SPGX which runs about 50 cents/sq ft. Extremely resistant to all fluids, solvents, staining, etc. Easy to apply, no mixing.

Photo below is of the product on a non stained floor.

See this link for info and tech data/instructions.

Lol, from Wikopedia! A little Tuesday afternoon humor!

A man cave[1] or manspace,[2] and less commonly a manland or mantuary is a male retreat[3] or sanctuary[4] in a home, such as a specially equipped garage,[5] spare bedroom,[4] media room,[6] den,[7] or basement.[7][8] The term "man cave" is a metaphor describing a room inside the house such as the basement or garage or attic or office, or outside the house such as a wood shed or tool room where "guys can do as they please", without fear of upsetting any female sensibility about house decor or design.[9] Paula Aymer of Tufts University calls it the "last bastion of masculinity".[9] The phrase is thought to come from the 1993 publication, Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus.[10]
While a wife may have substantial authority over a whole house in terms of design and decoration, she generally has no say about what gets "mounted on the walls" of a man's personal space.[9] Since it may be accepted that a woman has input on the decoration of the rest of the house, a man cave or man-space is in some sense a reaction to feminine domestic power.[9]

From wikipedia:
Man caves have multiple purposes: they are a place to be alone, to indulge in hobbies, and to hang out with male friends. Also it requires the owners balls to be placed in their wife's purse. It is, loosely, a male-only space to retreat to watch sports matches,[11] or play video games.[7][12] According to psychiatrist and author Scott Haltzman, it is important for a man to have a place to call his own, referring to a male area to which to retreat. Rules are relaxed; it is a place where other people's sensibilities about standards of cleanliness are not necessarily observed.[2]

...and welcome to Garage Journal!

On the floor topic (sorry for my participation in the minor thread derail) I'd be interested in hearing a few options myself. I had epoxy in my basement and love it, but too expensive for the shop. When I built the shop 5 years ago I used a clear sealant from the box store, and even with proper cleaning and etching prior to application it hasn't held up well. Scratches easily, lifts under hot tires, etc. I'm afraid now i may have to grind and reapply something better. There's a lesson here about getting what you pay for...

Clear polyurea can be fun (https://www.garageflooringllc.com/2017/05/12/clear-gloss-garage-floor-coating-polyuea/)

Tiles can also create a cool floor -- we have carpet ones that lock into most of our styles if needed.

Only if you weld very close to the floor. Torching is more of a hazard than welding.

Add some flake it will obscure just about anything.

Hi,
Welding slag blobs can burn any resinous floor coating, so we recommend protecting the floor with sheet metal or welding mats. Sparks won't bother an epoxy floor.

While I detest the words "Man Cave" depicting to me a Mr Rogers type with a never been used Snap-on Wrench in one hand and a cup of Green Tea in the other...LOL...sorry but there is more to the story but my Wife's gay decorator would have to explain it to you. He got an ear full when he called my office in the Shop a "Man Cave".

I bought reclaimed Oak flooring from an 1881 Warehouse. It wears like iron.

The only thing I would have done different is I would have sunk the floor down and added floor joists and a sub floor so it would squeak when you walk on it.

What did you put in his ear?
I have and will continue to distance myself from man-caves and persons who need a man-cave.
My youngest brother is gay and if it were not for him, I would not know I was dressed poorly. My excuse, I dress like Jay Leno.
